Killed for wearing shorts.

"An Iraqi tennis coach and two of his players were killed because they were wearing shorts, apparently in violation of a warning by Islamic extremists."

This is what Ann's anti-shorts crusades would look like, of course, if she were corrupted by extreme fundamentalist Islam.

I always had a sports exception!

Anyway, who hasn't made jokes that someone ought to be killed for wearing some bad fashion? I've always remembered the Fran Liebowitz wisecrack: "Your right to wear a lime green leisure suit ends where my eye begins." These jokes don't seem so funny when there are actually fascists afoot.

I think we should all wear shorts to work this week in solidarity. Ann, you on board?

This is just a terrible story, by the way: so symbolic of the sheer, bone-deep fascism and smallness of fanatics. It makes it very hard to imagine that it's possible to fruitfully negotiate with people operating under such a low level of rationality and perspective.

Well, I'm just sayin', it's a good thing we do not live in such a culture, so that jokes like "This dress looks better on... fire!" are actually funny.

I do have to admit that stories like these make me question whether "those people" "can handle" democracy (whether or not you agree that it was our job to help them attain it). I have to keep reminding myself that most of them don't want to have to put up with thugs like these, either.
