Audible Althouse! It's back! It's #80.

Oh, my friends, I rediscovered the true meaning of podcasting tonight. If you're not with me on this one, you're not with me. Go away! Go away and never come back!

You don't need an iPod. You can stream it right through your computer here.

But if you're really with me, you'll subscribe on iTunes:
Ann Althouse - Audible Althouse

And stay tuned, because I've got a video clip of this recording session, which I'm going to add here.

ADDED: The video clip is coming. But I found the poem that I talk about in the podcast, the one that Jean Shepherd used to read. It's "Evolution" by Landon Smith. It begins:
When you were a tadpole and I was a fish
In the Paleozoic time,
And side by side on the ebbing tide
We sprawled through the ooze and slime,
Or skittered with many a caudal flip
Through the depths of the Cambrian fen,
My heart was rife with the joy of life,
For I loved you even then.

Mindless we lived and mindless we loved
And mindless at last we died;
And deep in the rift of the Caradoc drift
We slumbered side by side.
The world turned on in the lathe of time,
The hot lands heaved amain,
Till we caught our breath from the womb of death

AND: What it looked like:

Well, now I'm looking forward to the diavlog. ;) The "hot" diavlog with Jonah was your best so far, IMO, so getting mad seems productive. ;)

1. I am pronouncing "banal" correctly. It is often -- off-ten -- mispronounced. It's the bane of my existence. Perhaps the bahn of yours.

2. Real Jean Shepherd fans do not like the emphasis on that movie. I remember him doing the story as a radio show long before the movie (which I can't bear to watch, because it's not the radio show).

3. No comment!

Do you imagine -- only in your head, presumably -- a voice for each of the regular commenters?

There are words, particular words that evoke memory...
The word 'chance' has an amazing power over me. I was driving from Denver to Salt Lake City with my then new girlfriend...we were hitting that point where a decision was coming, we could both tell, on a next step.
She had given me a little trinket to hang on my mirror in the car, a little think she'd picked up in Chinatown in San Francisco. The Chinese character she told me was "Chance", and I think we both knew what it meant to us individually and as a couple.
Now she's my wife, and the little bauble still hangs in the car. When I see it, or I hear the word "Chance" come into conversation it instantly puts me back into that car, that moment, when the future could have gone a million directions. I'm glad it went the direction it did. I'm glad for the chance I was given. I'm glad to always hear the word spoken.

So for your next podcast, you'll leave the microphone open while you Sleep?

(that would be a real tribute to Warhol)

(I won't be happy until I have a 5+ hour, single take, podcast)

So which one is that then? As in 'panel', 'anal', or 'canal'?

Or do we have 'ban-oll' or even 'barn-owl'?

We Brits tend to say 'frightful' instead - on the grounds that if something dare to be banal it must be frightful.

But even that comes at a price. The 'fri' has to be spat out loud, fast and hard - yet of course dryly - as if bellowed by a Regimental Sergeant Major upbraiding some particular posh and sloppy recruits; whilst the 'ght' is to be almost swallowed up by the speed and force of the whole delivery. (The 't' simply doesn't get a look in.)

Comes out a bit like "RIfle, absolutely bloody RIfle!"

Just the sort of thing to say to an unscrupulous garage attendant if you really want to kick off;)

Re video update - this is where I try mightily to exercise restraint and not say what's on my mind. ;)

Ruth Anne - I could bear to listen to (and watch) her talk all day long. ;) It must be my long-suffering inner pragmatist at work. ;)

.....that was the wrong cut 'n' paste. It was meant to be the comment about being willing and able to listen/view the Prof 'all day long', to which I was going to reply something along the lines of 'But what about the night - does she talk all night long too? Only one way to find out I guess...etc., etc.'

Instead I find I've pasted the zip code [as you folks call it] of the hotel where I'm staying on Thursday.

Now ain't that strange!

You couldn't put on just a little bit of makeup? I know it's Sunday, but still.

With just a little bit of styling, maybe a little mousse and back-brushing, your hair could have the Hillary Clinton power look.

So much unused potential.

Peace, Maxine

Maxine - it's really not needed. :p
