"Do you want to be near people or away from people?"

The restauranteur asked Governor Deval Patrick, the day after the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
"I said, ‘As far away as I can.’ So she put in the corner, me and my book on my iPad, and she starts bringing me things. Some of them edible. In fact all the food was edible. She starts bringing me things to drink as a celebration. And by the end of the meal, I was actually quite drunk, by myself.”

Ahh, that's just the attitude we want out of our elected representatives!

The Berkshires are a wonderful retreat for monied NYorkers and Bostonians.

I summer there for 5 days. Canyon Range, Vow of Silence Rejuventation, Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood.

The best part is the poor are not allowed.

The 5 day retreat is a steal for only $3000 too.

Hello?

Go, you will love it.

Apt question considering what just happened. To be safe from terrorists, stay away from innocent women, children and others living their lives peacefully.

I can't criticize the man for hitting the bottle too hard, but he shouldn't talk about it.

Unless you're intent on defying prescriptive spelling standards, there's no "n" in restaurateur.

That's kind of a sweet piece.

Probably not the next black president, it seems.

Self sabotage?

Do you think that story hurts him? It's just me but I think it humanizes him.

I see a hard working man trying to get his evening meal and a little serenity through some reading and a glass of wine.

I see a human being like me, except that I never face the kind of extreme stress that he has in his work.

Those who are attacking him for this seem like jerks to me.

It seems odd that he was traveling without a security detail.

That's the thing, it made me think about how much stress he had been under.

After 9/11, some months after 9/11, I used to just think about John Ashcroft and everything he went through. Of all the guys on the job he seemed to me like he suffered a lot. I think I'll always have that feeling for him. All that stuff I didn't like about him just goes away when I think of that.

Damn, I rarely agree with Titus and most of his comments just shit on the thread but he is dead on in this thread.

What an ungentlemanly leak by the NSA.

I think it is cool that the Governor takes his i-pad into a Restaurant with him and uses it to calm his thoughts by reading some good writer's works. Maybe he checks Althouse.

That does focus your scatted mind, although many say it adds to your thoughts. In my experience it calms me down like grabbing the horns of the alter.

I agree with you and Ann. After a day like that if I was in his shoes I too would have done the same and probably would have started a second bottle. But that aside he is a Mass democrat which means on any other given day he's asshole. To paraphrase the title of that great Kinky Friedman song he is an asshole from Masshole.

Those of us who live under mini-me don't think this story humanizes him. He ordered the citizens of several towns to stay indoors - unless ordered out at gunpoint by SWAT teams. And now we learn he was napping until awakened by a phone call from Obama, calling to remind him to lift the shelter in place order. Recall that Deval ordered every Massachusetts resident except "key personnel" to refrain from driving during the large snowstorm in February of this year. Two rather serious orders from a governor in less than six months, wouldn't you say?

I hope he's a better fellow than Holder, because he looks like the go-to guy when Holder craters.

Sure, this humanizes him. I can appreciate that he'd want to be alone and just read a good book after the previous few days. But this story does raise a couple of questions. Who goes to a restaurant and forgets to bring his wallet? And did he not have his security detail with him? If he did, why not borrow the money to pay the tab from one of his security guys and then pay the guy back? And if he was alone did he drive himself home while drunk?
