That man is wearing a plaid dress, and I hope he isn't wearing shorts under it, like that blue jeans guy...

Kim Davis says she has left the Democratic Party "because she felt the Democratic Party no longer represents her."

Yes, the Democratic Party does not have room for ignorant bigots like Kim Davis. Luckily for her she can find a comfortable home in the Republican Party. Which she has.

When I was in college (Class of '65), a standard uniform was tweed sport-coat, shetland sweater, blue button-down shirt, and faded jeans (and loafers). There was, in that era, no such thing as pre-faded jeans, so a major (perhaps even the worst) fashion faux pas was wearing unfaded jeans -- you needed to fade out your new jeans in secret before you ever wore them in public. Later in life I found that, even in places where "casual" clothes were acceptable, jeans were verboten. When my giant DC law firm adopted a casual dress code -- initially on Fridays, then all summer, and eventually all the time -- jeans were still prohibited.

I just came back from a 2-week trip to England (the English seem to call their country "the UK", but I won't) and wore jeans as my only trousers. They are easy to pack, and you can wear the same pair for quite a while before they look significantly worse than on the first day (airing them out is a good idea). Judging by the Royal Family, unfaded jeans are now acceptable. I'm not sure.

I did not, however, wear shorts, as Althouse will be relieved to know. The average high temperature was about 62 degrees fahrenheit (warm for northern England in September I'm told). But I say (proudly) that during the six years I lived in Fort Lauderdale, I wore shorts almost daily during the summer (April-November). To paraphrase the Gatlin Brothers: It don't matter at all where you've lived before, south Florida's a brand new game.

Wilbur lives in Hollywood, just south of Ft. Lauderdale.

The notion that shorts are inappropriate for men here is laughable.

Here are a couple more "ignorant bigots" that have left the Democrat Party and become Republicans.

How's that labeling those you disagree with "ignorant bigots" working out for you, Democrat party?

Megan McArdle can perhaps follow up with an article on what the Democrats may learn from losing Obama.

One consquence of Obama moving to transform the nation in ways it does not want to go, is that he has no following; there is no one to continue his program, since no one but he knows what it really is.

Thus Hillary!, whom Obama is now losing patience with and is lowering the boom on; Bernie Sanders, who until a few months ago was known as a quirky old eccentric from Vermont; and Slow Joe, the party hack, also in his seventies.

So, will there be an "October surprise," and Obama will announce someone else as his chosen successor?

Who could it possibly be?

Ann Althouse said...

What's up with all the young men running these days and not wearing shirts? It's a sudden change. We're calling it "streaking."

Hagar said...

That is not what "streaking" means.

Hagar said...

A lot of you complain about the Republican congress critters, but what about the Democrat ones?
They've just been told to vote as directed, or we will cut you off at the knees, and they have obediently fallen into line.

Obama has not consulted them on hardly any of his legislation or his executive moves.

Nor the party "wise men" from either academia or state politics.

And in 15 months Obama will be out of office forever.

As the Democrats become a minority majority, more anti-white, and extremist in tone and practice, and as the GOP dies off as a national party, there will be a chance for some thing like BJN to emerge and take their place as a national center right party. Whites will need a new political home and party to represent their interests esp.once they go below 50%.

At exactly what percentage of Indian genes does a "Hispanic" person become "non-white"?

Does a person of Spanish descent's Phoenician, Arab, and Berber genes count in this calculation?

Athouse, did you see the rumor that Bloomberg is thinking of running for president? Maybe the makers of that anti-Bloomberg ad had reason to suspect as much.

Man in shorts slouches at a "Blue Jean Nation"-promoting table.

He slouches because the movement he represents has much to slouch about. Visit their site and read. Notice the intellectual slouching going on.

Blue Jean Nation is to politics as the Church of the SubGenius is to religion.

Just go to the Blue Jean Nation web site, read their BS, check out their contributors (hint: Young, Black and Gifted), it's all about the 1% versus the rest of us. Free education, less taxes for the 99%, Citizens United (bad), take back the power.

Oh, and stop the racial disparity in incarcerations.

Save the whales. Walker sucks. Down the establishment. Wear jeans. Say stupid sh*t.

So wearing shorts may be the least of his transgressions against common sense and good taste.

Blue Jean Nation and not one photo of a Hot Girl with a Hot Ass wearing her blue jeans on that aforementioned Hot Ass?

Really: Wisconsin doesn't have any?

The First Girl I Had Anal Sex With wore her younger brother's discarded 501s each year: no one woman has worn them so well as her.

She had the taut remains of burns on her arms, and the resulting remnants of skin grafts removed from her hips.

I could go on.

I am Laslo.

BJN and its "third way" ilk (No Labels is a prime example) are the natural and inevitable consequence of the Obama presidency. Scroll back through the years to 2007, when Barack Obama's campaign against Hillary Clinton (known then by the Clintonistas as Hillary Rodham Clinton) for the nomination was just gathering steam. The True Believers knew, they just knew, he was the One. They knew because He told them so. He was the One they'd been waiting for. Every other messiah had crapped out one way or another, but Obama was the One. The trans-racial, trans-national, transubstantiate Anointed One who would fulfill The Promise!

Eight years later and the Promise has come to fruition.

The Boomer hegemony of blue jeans, t-shirts and sneakers has been a sartorial holocaust for the the last 60 years. Men wearing shorts is small beer by comparison.

In addition, and separately:

I remember the streaking fad, and as I remember it, in the early '70s, it melds the jeans and nakedness fads. There's a specific story I can tell about that. I think I already told that story online years ago, but maybe I didn't .

It involves Newark, Delaware; my dad; a Newark High School student; my mom; and also me and my brother, observers.

And not 60 years ago, on any front. Just sayin'.

rcommal said...

1955: The start of the blue-jeans hegemony? As well as the hegemony of "sneakers" and of t-shirts [sic]?

rcommal said...

Hey, well, you know. What the hell. Why should I not be schooled about all of that? It is, for sure, a true thing that I need to be educated and re-educated. Thus, I sure do deserve any schooling I get/receive. I rebel too much, and also I respond too little to harsh judgment, specifically that to which clearly I can see is too little attached to serious thought. I cop to all of that. I acknowledge all of that. I own all of that. Start to finish.

----

I agree to receive schooling.

I do not agree to admire the schoolers, afterward.

Coupe has left a new comment on the post "Blue jean nation.":

Ron said...I haven't worn jeans in 20+ years....never liked 'em

Since moving to Oklahoma, I have been living in bib-overalls and white painters pants (with paint on them) and construction boots.

I find that people are more relaxed around me, sort of like Junior Samples, only not as good looking.

When I sit in a restaurant, they automatically bring me an ice tea, because that's the way it works.

Junior Samples died more than 30 years ago, Coupe, and when he died then he was just a couple of years older than I am now. When he died, I was 22, going on 23, years old, and of course I knew who he was, at the time, in real time, in real life. 'd say that he died young, which is such a shame and too bad. (Perhaps not the same way you'd put things, though: Perhaps you'd like it if I were gone, already, quite/enough a while ago, and that Junior Samples had died just, I dunno, something more like 15-20 years ago.)

It's a shame, isn't it, that "wishin' ain't gettin', innit"?

---

Iced tea. I remember iced tea--since you brought it up (I didn't; you did).

You just think I don't, or--more to the point--you wish I didn't. I do, though.

Last night I dreamed - really - that I and some other people were taking an exam from Althouse, and I totally failed because all her questions looked liked plain statements to me, and I had no answers for them.

And yeah, I still have no idea what the "streaking" joke is about.

BJN sounds like yet another attempt (e.g., Occupy [some location]) to fire up a "populist" left party, as compared to the enrich-the-elites establishment Democratic Party. I suspect it will end the same way.

Ann Althouse said...

It seems to be something that started this year. Near where we live, we always see lots of runners, running in groups of 2 or more, from the high school and from the university. Since the semester began, the males are all running shirtless. Meade started calling them "streakers" and I found that very funny. If you don't find it funny, that's fine, but don't tell me that we don't understand that "streakers," traditionally, are completely naked. In our humor, it's funny to call them "streakers" as if they were completely naked. I really don't care if the humor is shared. It just irks me to be corrected as if I don't know the meaning of the word.

Ah.. whatever... I thought that "Confucius say" form of humor was consigned to the dustbin of humor history at least a quarter century ago.

Gahrie said...

That is not what "streaking" means.

You forget...here at chez Althouse, words have no objective meaning, you have to instead rely on transcendent interpretation to divine their meaning.

Althouse is a good Progressive on this.

“When I use a word,’ Althouse said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

’The question is,’ said Hagar, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

’The question is,’ said Althouse, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.”
