Female privilege.

ADDED: You might think: Katy Perry is not objecting, but what can she do but keep smiling and show herself to be a good sport? She can't improvise, and she can't step on Ellen's effort at comic performance. Ellen is the comedian. She's the comedian with a show, a media outlet to the fans. You can shut that door if you choose, but what's the motivation?

Katy Perry clearly wants her breasts to be noticed and admired — or at least she's decided to use them as devices to further her career. So why would she complain (as long as Ellen doesn't become a target of #MeTooism)?

Ellen is clowning in a style that reminds me of Jerry Lewis, so I went looking for a photo of Jerry Lewis staring at a woman's breasts. I couldn't find one, but I did find this example of Jerry doing the complete opposite of staring at a woman's breasts:

It's ok, though: when you're a celebrity they let you do it.

I just read that a second woman has accused HW Bush of inappropirate behavior! I read the first accuser's statement that she was "sexually assaulted," and that HW Bush told her a "dirty joke." Then I read that the sexual assault was touching her butt and the dirty joke was saying his favorite magician is David Cop-a-feel. Then I realized that even women don't believe their own bullshit and I'm getting tired of having to pretend like I do, too. THEN I decided that if this is the kind of bullshit you people actually want then I should do my part to help out, and that'll include enforcing the same sort of standards on all other behavior.

So, in that spirit: thank you for the post, Professor. Ellen should immediately apologize; there's no way she got Katy Perry's consent for that behavior ahead of time so that's blatant sexual harassment and proudly publicizing it just makes things worse.

Hey, didja hear about Mark Halperin?
Five Women Accuse Mark Halperin of Sexual Harassment

Those accusations sound a little bit worse than "telling a dirty joke" or briefly touching some woman's butt, but I suppose the important thing is to sufficiently muddy the waters. If I watched late night TV I bet I'd see a few jokes about ol' Poppy Bush.

But there are several articles about a musician associated with Taylor Swift eating a banana during a Katy Perry monologue at an Awards Show. One of such articleshere.

You can insinuate a lot with a banana.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

But! Do not forget: whatever a woman does is empowering.
Wearing a revealing dress is empowering.
Exaggeratedly staring at the semi-exposed breasts of a celebrity and then posting a picture of yourself doing that, for comic effect, is epowering.

BEING stared at is empowering...if the woman decides it is.
If she decides it's not then it's sexual harassment, in which case taking offense, understanding your status as a victim, and calling for justice from the PC mobs is empowering.

I bet Katy's got this one covered (so to speak).

Matt Sablan said...

Or maybe even ask Katy if she is interested in most every guy's dream - three way lesbo action? Hetero orientation seems so much more straight forward - a guy ogling a woman's breast like that right in front of his wife is likely to get slapped by her, or worse.

Also--has anyone actually alleged "ass-grab?" I have seen the accusation characterized as a "grope" but from the primary source I've not seen grope nor grab--the one just says sexually assault and the other said "touched" as far as I can tell. I'm not willing to say touch = grab = grope, but I understand any (intentional, unwanted) touching = assault, so here we are.

It is: Portia de Rossi A very attractive woman, no doubt about that. Probably not as well endowed as Katy Perry, breast-wise, but as a male feminist I'd never actually comment on womens' bodies nor make comparisons between women, etc, so I'm sure I wouldn't know.
Rossi was terrific on Better Off Ted and on Arrested Development. Did you know she was in the movie Scream 2? I hadn't realized that until recently, but in fairness she was mostly in scenes with Rebecca Gayheart, a crush of adolescent Hoodlum's so the oversight should be understandable.

Nothing new there. That name has been around since she became famous. Around the house here, we have called her "Degenerate" for years. My partner has a fairly strict Catholic view of morality, combined with having been hit on by numerous lesbians over the years. Sometimes she comes across to me as almost as homophobic as a teen aged boy. Yet, every once in awhile, I will catch her watching Ellen's show.

There is a lesson in comedy to be found in Althouse's two photos.

Both function on the idea of large breasts being irresistible.

With Lewis the joke is him not looking where everyone can't help but look.

With Ellen the joke is her looking where everyone can't help but look, and exaggerating it.

Now pretend the women of attention in the two photos was showing her cock.

Would the size of the woman's cock factor into if it was funny or not?

@Hoodlum - Portia is the one who really made "Better Off Ted" so great. Partner's brother loved her too there. Some of my favorite actresses have that same edge that I find so compelling, and it inevitably turns out that they are lesbians (or, in Portia's case, ultimately come out as such). My partner has it too, which is why we are approaching 20 years together, and maybe why so many lesbians find her so attractive.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

Disagree. With Lewis I think the joke is that the proximity to Monroe/her body/her revealing outfit caused him to "faint" (in a stereotypically-womanly way) which prompted Monroe to catch him (in a stereotypically-masculine/chivalrous way)...which in effect means he tricked her into groping him (a comedic reversal). I think the picture implies he DID get a good look a few seconds before.

I am willing to examine the evidence in detail on this one. "Back and to the left" and what not.

You know what's funny, though? Read through some of the comments from those posts understanding that it's been 10 years but that in even that short time the Leftist pro-feminists attacking Althouse make all kinds of statements that Leftist feminists today would find "problematic" at best!

Whoa! Not only did that poster ASSUME THE GENDER of people in the picture, they also assert--as a self-evident fact!--that men are on average taller than women! That's the kind of sexist blasphemy that'll get you kicked out of a university teaching job, easy.
How far we've come, huh?

Bruce Hayden said...

"I'm guessing Ellen wears the cock in that family, so she probably wouldn't look at one on another woman."

That's where it gets interesting. On the one hand, Portia was Ellen's "kept woman" well before they got married. Story was that Ellen bought her horses, or some such, to keep her happy. But on the flip side, Ellen comes across to me as softly female, which is why so many women can find her so comfortable and non-threatening. But that "edge" I mentioned with Portia is almost masculine.

I am not sure that I would call it "female privilege" as much as "lesbian privilege". The problem here is that lesbians are at least two-fers- being "victimized" both for their sex and their sexual orientation. Add being a POC (person of color) and a lesbian can almost always get to speak first when speakers are progressively "stacked". Ellen is a very good comedian, and part of the comedic effect here is that she can get away with it, due to her lesbian privilege, when a straight guy, in the same position could not. These days, it isn't that she is leering that is funny, but that she can get away with it.

Oh, I disagree with that completely. There is a clear double standard on these matters when it comes to men versus women. Look at the difference in coverage between when a male teacher has sex with his female student versus when a female teacher does the same thing. Women are routinely permitted to act in a way that if the sex roles were reversed, the man would be called a chauvinist pig and a rapist.

Last month it would have been mildly amusing. She didn't keep up with the times, and that rightly can be held as an impeachable offense for a trendsetter. It's behavior such as this that leads to leers on college campuses. As a trendsetter, she should know better.

Bruce Hayden said...

"These days, it isn't that she is leering that is funny, but that she can get away with it."

Let me add here that for some women, notably my almost homophobic partner, a lesbian ogling or leering at her tits is worse, probably far worse, than a guy doing it - because the leering suggests interest in homosexual sex with them. Of course, current progressive dogma would privilege the lesbian doing the leering over the straight woman whose tits are being ogled, thanks to their advanced degree of victim hood.

I've observed most women in DC, NYC and Hollywood wear tight clothes and stiletto heels...similar to women's styles in the 40s and 50s. Megyn Kelly's outfits have been tight skirts and sweaters that look like they were sprayed on (no kidding). Her outfits could have come straight from Marilyn Monroe's closet. Two days ago Kelly switched her sweater for a more modest blouse and she continues to wear blouses. Now that sexual harassment is the cause célèbre on her talk show, perhaps she's decided she no longer wants to use her breasts to further her career. #femaleprivilege

How is glaring at a women's breasts any different than glaring at a guy's pecs or biceps? People would joke and glare about Schwarzenegger's muscles during his body building and movie career. It was part of his show biz shtick. Same with Jayne Mansfield's breasts or any actress flaunting serious cleavage.

What Ellen did, in an comic exaggerated manner, was what anyone with an attraction to female breasts would do.

Because, at least at the time, just staring at a woman's breasts wasn't funny. Trying hard not to stare could be. Staring at something else but it seems like you're staring at a woman's breasts could be. Trying unsuccessfully to stare could be. Even this sort of humor - a la Benny Hill - was considered crass. Interesting how Ellen Degeneres single-handedly stripped all the humor out of the situation.

It's a naturally feminine feature. They have other feminine physical features, which apparently forces some males to transition.

Equal and complementary.

His point seemed to be suggesting she looked good without makeup. In fact, she doesn't look awful, but there's a big difference between zero makeup in bad lighting and stage makeup with good lighting.
