"More than 70 firefighters battled a blaze at the London Zoo early Saturday that... killed at least one animal..."

"... an aardvark... named Misha."

"Four meerkats were missing.... The world’s oldest scientific zoo, the London zoo dates from the 1800s and houses more than 20,000 animals...."

It started in the dictionary and the aardvark was there at the beginning.

My first thought was sloth.

Something too slow to move to the non-burning side of the cage.

Meanwhile several Cats in our neighborhood are missing-in-action, presumed lost.

Where is the press coverage?

Well, those are just, ahem, mere cats, not meerkats.

Clearly the aardvark stumbled upon the meerkats' escape plan, and they had to off him and then cover up the crime by setting fire to his cage ...

The status of the meerkats has been changed to "missing and presumed dead." They're wonderful little animals and it's sad to lose them. The fire seems to have started in a cafeteria and spread through the zoo's souvenir shop to the petting zoo.

Somebody needs to domesticate meerkats. They're pack animals like dogs, but bury their shit like cats. The perfect pet.

I suspect that in a few years that Britain will have a meerkat problem. No one can shoot them for obvious reasons, and no one will think how it could have happened, and blame climate change.

(I hope the poor little guys did survive and go on to be prolific).
