"What did the men with Donald Trump do when he spoke of ‘shithole countries’?"

Asks Philip Kennicott, the "culture critic" at The Washington Post.

Trump has denied making the remark, it's worth mentioning (even as I feel I should check Twitter to see if he's reframed that denial since I looked last (no, he's just blaming the Democrats for missing the opportunity to fix DACA)).

But I like Kennicott's refocussing of the question. (It's like in the #MeToo discussions when we shift from looking at the accused offender to wondering what the other people who saw what was happening did about it.)

Kennicott says:
What I want to know is how the men in the room with him reacted. This is the dinner table test: When you are sitting and socializing with a bigot, what do you do when he reveals his bigotry? I’ve seen it happen, once, when I was a young man, and I learned an invaluable lesson. An older guest at a formal dinner said something blatantly anti-Semitic. I was shocked and laughed nervously. Another friend stared at his plate silently. Another excused himself and fled to the bathroom. And then there was the professor, an accomplished and erudite man, who paused for a moment, then slammed his fist on the table and said, “I will never listen to that kind of language, so either you will leave, or I will leave.” The offender looked around the table, found no allies and left the gathering. I don’t know if he felt any shame upon expulsion.

Did Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) threaten to leave the Oval Office? Did Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) speak sharply to the president, saying no one should speak like that, not in the White House, not in the United States, not in decent society? (He did, at least the next morning when speaking to the media.) Did anyone suggest that perhaps the president should wash his mouth out with soap and take a time out to think about what he just did?
I would like to see more in-person confrontation. It's kind of weaselly to sit there and listen and then afterwards talk to the press and let them — who didn't experience the context or have the ability to shape and propel the conversation — do your chiding and shaming for you.

When I think about this subject, the name that comes to mind is Eartha Kitt:

Meanwhile in Wisco, an incident reported with obvious raaacism:
Last night, Racine County, Wisconsin Sheriff’s received reports of an armed man on a Greyhound bus from Milwaukee to Chicago, WISN-TV reported. The man was threatening to kill other passengers.

Racine County Sheriffs Deputies chased the man into Lake County, Illinois. During the chase, passengers were yelling at the man to stop the bus. Eventually the deputies had to use spike strips to stop the bus.

This afternoon, it has come to light that the suspect, 31-year-old Margarito Vargas-Rosas, is an illegal immigrant who lives in Chicago and works at a restaurant in Milwaukee.

According to the Racine County Sheriff’s office, the bus has been seized and they’re working on locating a firearm. They also said Vargas-Rosas is being held on making terrorist threats.

My larger point is about the moral confusion that has led Ann to conclude that the national enterprise benefits from having a President who's a racist.

Judge: Trump racism may have been key to ending DACA

Court's order follows ruling earlier this week to allow 'Dreamers' to renew their permits.

The federal judge who earlier this week ordered the reversal of President Donald Trump's decision to end the program protecting so-called Dreamers said in a new ruling Friday that it is "plausible" that Trump shut down the program for racial reasons.

"These allegations raise a plausible inference that racial animus towards Mexicans and Latinos was a motivating factor in the decision to end DACA,” U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup wrote, referring to the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program bestowing quasi-legal status and work permits on undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children.

Alsup noted that two of the suits filed challenging the decision the Trump administration announced in September to wind-down the program cited Trump's anti-Mexican and anti-Latino rhetoric during the 2016 campaign, including his description of Mexicans as rapists and of immigrants coming across the southern border as "animals."

"Circumstantial evidence of intent, including statements by a decisionmaker, may be considered in evaluating whether government action was motivated by a discriminatory purpose,”wrote Alsup, an appointee of President Bill Clinton. "These statements were not about the rescission (which came later) but they still have relevance to show racial animus against people south of our border."

I am disgusted by the mania about words.
Reality trumps words.
In other countries reality is the same, jobs and money and roads and concrete.
I mam a foreigner and was raised in three languages and can get along in a couple of others.
The words vary, as do the ins and outs of particular ones.

Words are not universal, and should therefore be held to be trivial.

That some words are holy, and others unholy, makes no sense.
And I was raised Catholic, and loaded down with prayers and verbal formulas.
We had things that were holy, but they weren't holy in the sense of the way words are in the US today. In this country it is, these days, maniacal.

Maybe the simple fact is that nations like Norway have the kinds of skilled workers our economy needs, not just more automation bait that are just going to end up on the dole, or pushing our own unskilled workers out of jobs and onto the dole.

I don’t know why you can’t see that you are making a statement of faith and personal belief, not fact.

I see our resident bimbo thinks that her vapid pronouncements become witty if she sticks # in front of them.

I'd say #IngaIsRetarded except that insults Down syndrome people who, unlike Inga, are generally sweet and kind.

The left has spent my entire lifetime destroying the guardrails of decent social conduct and now they complain about the use of "shit hole" in a behind closed doors private conversation. So lefty Senator DICK Durban FUCK YOU.

I have read and watched most of the coverage with "who cares?" Trump made a critical statement about some third world countries (which most Americans agree with) and D's jumped to exploit it for political advantage.

Now, I read Ann and she makes a point that no one else made. If the comment was so bad, what did Durbin do about it at the time?

walter said...

KC,
Durbin wasn't concerned about it being "bad", he was ecstatic that it was useful.
He was probably texting his media buds with the scoop while he was in the meeting.

Never forget what this is all really about. The MSM is 100% coordinated and owned by about 20 people. They have to keep the DNC/Russian/FBI collusion story out of the news.

The left is going to scream "RACISM" all spring. They know it is bullshit but they have to hold on to it because they need to justify the violence that is intended this summer. Several Democrats have recently threatened or wished violence against Trump loudly and personally and publicly.

Not one word of condemnation from any other leftists. Just like they cheering Hodgkinson and Rand Paul's attacker who is still being protected by leftists.

They did the same thing to Reagan. There are going to be attempts on Trump's life this summer just like with Reagan. They have done this all before. Democracy is a train they get off of when they don't like where it is going. Their "Russian Collusion" coup failed. They are not going to let their election loss go. They do not accept election losses.

When we turn the oil spigot on, Norway’s economy might not do so well so we might see an increase Norwegian immigration in a few years.

walter said...

Well..Trump, IIRC referred to Norway's use of "this thing called water" ("hydro").
So they got THAT goin' for 'em.

Did Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) threaten to leave the Oval Office? Did Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) speak sharply to the president, saying no one should speak like that, not in the White House, not in the United States, not in decent society?

No - they deferred to Trump's authority - but Lindsey Grahamnesty turned to Senator Dick Turban, famously responding to the president's thoughtlessness: "There he stands all Spic'n Span. Where were you when the shit hit the fan?"

You see, this is precisely why your over the top nonstop hyperbole is ridiculous. You assume that Radical Islamist Terrorists are given a pass by liberals. You assume so much. You exaggerate so much. You live in your hyperbolic world. When your exaggeration doesn’t work, you outright lie.

If you say mean things about Muslim Child Rape Gangs in England the leftists come after you.

Leftists have been defending Muslim rapists in Europe for decades and hiding the true statistics. Because that is what leftists do. They infest whatever society they area part of and tear it apart.

Every Muslim majority country in the world as wiped out at least one minority. Muslim countries are shitholes where women are property. The leftists want more Muslims from these countries.

Why?

You can say whatever you want Inga. You are not good people. It is the question you refuse to answer. We know why you refuse to answer it.

I am in complete agreement with Andrew Klavan: “So, when it comes to the Great Shithole Controversy of 2018, my feeling is: I do not care, not even a little. I’m sorry that it takes someone like Trump to break the spell of silence the Left is forever weaving around us. I wish a man like Ronald Reagan would come along and accomplish the same thing with more wit and grace. But that was another culture.“

Was it just last June when Democrat Senator were publicly launching F-bombs in their speeches? Why yes it was. Did Durbin and the press complain then?

Trump was reacting to the Turban Durbin/Grahamnesty plan that "protects" people from shitholes.

I take "protect" as "amnesty" for the favored group.

> President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they discussed protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to several people briefed on the meeting.

Could this be Trump's maneuver to tie his own hands.

We got Trump because of the stupidity of 'politically correct.' Who are we going to get now that calling a shithole a 'shithole' is a flab for bigotry?

Vet66 said...

What happened to the old "Truth to Power?" from the 60's beloved by the aging folks among us? POTUS Trump is not politically correct which is one of the main reasons he was elected by the "deplorables." The way POTUS Trump speaks may be off-putting to the cocktail crowd who usually have the decency to hide the same language behind a napkin at their cocktail parties-"AHEM! This may come as a shock to some in the audience but their are "Shitholes" aplenty not only in the U.S. but around the world. Maybe we should begin describing them as what the French call them "La Trine" which Mel Brooks used in one of his movies with Cloris Leachman. At Least POTUS Trump cleaned up his act a little when he referred to the Washington shithole as a swamp that needs to be drained. Does that ease the outrage a trifle?

Robert Catesby said...

Apparently Sen. Graham did speak up: "(Graham) spoke up and made a direct comment on what the president said,” Durbin told reporters. “For him to confront the president as he did, literally sitting next to him, took extraordinary political courage and I respect him for it.”

Do I trust Sen. Durbin? No. He stated very clearly that a GOP Senator told President Obama, "I cannot even stand to look at you." The Obama White House denied the claim.

Do I trust President Trump? No. He doesn't tell the truth, either.

RE: If it's not racist then why is Trump denying it?
It makes him look bad by using bad language and disparaging other countries. It damages his negotiating position. It may ultimately undermine a deal he wants.

What I don't see in any of the sound and fury being written about this comment is why it is racist. Lots of virtual signaling, and lots of "Well, if you don't know!" I don't hear any adults in the room with a reasoned argument. Certain people are desparate to prove that Trump is a racist, and they have zeroed in on this as their ultimate proof. It's nonsense.

[full disclosure: I don't support Trump. I didn't vote for him. And I don't like him. He doesn't speak for me.]

(Again)Here is what Trump actually said:

“That’s when he used those sickening, heartbreaking remarks, saying, ‘Those shitholes send us the people that they don’t want.’ He repeated that. He didn’t just say it one time,” Durbin said.

That puts an entirely different light on things. Trump is saying the governments of those shithole countries select their worse citizens to allow exit.

Wait a minute! You don't get to claim that Trump made a nuanced, sensible, credible, realistic use of the phrase "shithole countries." Because Trump denies using that phrase, right? And TrumpWorld is somehow banking, on Trump's having never uttered it. They are claiming (wrongly, I think) that Cotton and Perdue are actually denying that Trump said any such thing. TrumpWorld is all united, it seems, in claiming that it is just fake news, to suggest tha Trump ever said, "shithole countries."

This is what I mean, about TrumpWorld trying to have it both ways. Winking and claiming that it was a perfectly okay thing to say among themselves, but denying it in any public forum where Trump would actually have to answer for it.
