At the Deep Snow Café..

IMG_1945

... we weren't snowed in. We got out. Bought a pie. Listened to a folksinger play "The Wind." Discussed notNeutral cups with the café owner. It's a lovely sunny midday in deep-snow Wisconsin and a fine enough time for an open thread.

And here's the Althouse Portal to Amazon in case you need to buy something — like this nice set of 4 nonNeutral coffee mugs.

Note to self: Never park bike next to road to be plowed.

Most of the college-age sons/daughters of the elitists treat their bicycles like shit in the UW area of Madison. Mommy and Daddy will always cough up a new one if the old one gets rusty.

Andrew McCarthy discusses the Grassley Memo. McCarthy's article is basically a mea culpa, which he concludes with:

"I spent many months assuring people that nothing like this could ever happen — that the FBI and Justice Department would not countenance the provision to the FISA court of uncorroborated allegations of heinous misconduct. When Trump enthusiasts accused them of rigging the process, I countered that they probably had not even used the Steele dossier. If the Justice Department had used it in writing a FISA warrant application, I insisted that the FBI would independently verify any important facts presented to the court, make any disclosures that ought in fairness be made so the judge could evaluate the credibility of the sources, and compellingly demonstrate probable cause before alleging that an American was a foreign agent. I was wrong."

It looks like the Oberlin College winter experience, back when they didn't allow cars.

Oberlin had the compensation that there was a grass airport just west of town, and the guy would put skis on the airplanes in the winter that you rent.

Our athletic club recently got some bikes with snow tires for us to try out. I'm skeptical.

SonofNewo has posted a couple more videos about the Charlottesville incident.

Watch in this order:

1) Charlottesville Revisited: Hidden Evidence, Unreported Facts, and Lies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8PZajmgLKw

2) BREAKING: The FBI Stole Evidence out of Charlottesville
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6JqO35Nqjo

The videos are about the events on Fourth Street. The anti-racism protesters were supposed to march north on Fifth Street, but mysteriously they were diverted north on Fourth Street. James Fields drove south on Fourth Street into the crowd of protesters, which was mostly at the intersection of Fourth Street and Water Street.

About 1:15 minutes before Fields drove into the crowd, he drove slowly south on Fourth Street and stopped his car within the block north of that intersection. He stayed in that location for an unknown period of time and then backed his car northward for about a block. Then he stopped on Fourth Street between Main Street and Market Street. Now he was about a block-and-a-half north of that intersection of Fourth Street and Water Street.

Then he drove fast, south on Fourth Street, a block-and-a-half distance, into the crowd of anti-racism protesters that were at the intersection of Fourth and Water.

Then he backed up north on Fourth Street, two blocks, to Market Street and then drove away on Market Street.

-----

So, his movements included a back-up of about one block north on Fourth Street. Then he stopped for a while on Fourth Street, between Main Street and Market Street -- about a block-and-a-half north of the crowd of protesters.

At that point in time, he stopped in the vicinity of a pie shop that was between Main and Market. That pie shop had a security camera that filmed the street in front of the pie shop. That camera probably showed Fields stopped in his car for a while before he raced south into the crowd.

The FBI seized the film from that pie shop's camera and has not informed the local police investigators and prosecutors about the existence of that film. Meanwhile, Fields has been indicted.

I speculate that the film shows Fields talking with someone while he is stopped in his car in front of the pie shop.

Studded tires work on bicycles, for ice. Put one on the front wheel first.

Unfortunately ice conditions don't last long before becoming salted slush conditions, or tire-rutted snow conditions.

I'm sure our resident dullard, #IngaKnew, will be posting this up shortly, as she is a huge McCarthy fan and was copy and pasting his stuff constantly. I mean to otherwise would mean she is intellectually dishonest and a hypocrite.

They're hunting for Kelly's scalp and maybe they'll get it. This might prove to be another Pyrrhic victory. If Kelly did not act with sufficient alacrity when informed of Porter's misdeeds, what does that say about the employers of Rose and Lauer. They will parse the differences, but I'm pretty sure that someday this will come back and bite them in the ass.

The Porter thing has a faint odor of Jack Ryan's divorce records.

The FBI wants to warn Trump to lay off.

I asked my daughter about this guy and if she knows who he is

What struck me odd at the time — having retired in 2015 after serving for 25 years in the FBI agent and executive management ranks — was this: Who afforded a GS-13 bureau employee the privilege to have a personal opinion piece published?

An official farewell soiree flyer from the FBI’s Los Angeles office announced that party attendees could “celebrate [Josh’s] new endeavor defending the Bureau as a CNN Law Enforcement Analyst.” Well, knowing how difficult it is to break into the television analyst ranks, and having the privilege to work at CNN as a full-time contributor since last May, I graciously extend a hearty welcome

Who is this guy ?

Oh, you didn't know that Kelly was fired along with Tillerson in January, but Trump is so incompetent that they decided to pull a George Costanza and just show up.

ha! Well, ours aren't motorized, so not as much fun. I'll stick to cross-country skiing for now.

We finally got to go cross-country skiing! Last year we only went out once, so I was concerned that my skill might be gone entirely. But I did fine. Felt great. Though it was only 10°.

Meanwhile, here in the West, there's a shortage of snowpack in the Rockies and Sierras. That means less water this summer. Bummer.

Longest drought on record already. Only a trace of precipitation since the beginning of the water year, Oct. 1 2017.

We're supposed to get over 1.5" of rain by tomorrow in Central PA (it's coming down fairly heavily now), on top of the snow and ice we had last Wednesday. With temps warming, it will break up the ice in the Susquehanna River. Look out below the river bridges at Harrisburg for flooding. Feast or famine. It'll keep me from the Great Outdoor Show though.

10 F and calm is pleasant. As long as there's no wind, it's lovely.

I prefer a constant 10-15F over a freeze-melt cycle. Better for skiing and skating.

Well, at least curling in on. Mixed doubles!!

Check out the reporting on the ghastly conditions in England - snow, wind and below zero temperatures. As much as 5 cm. of snow has fallen in some places; temps of -9C and high winds, gusts of 40 km per hour. A white hell. One man had to shovel around his car to clear accumulations of over half an inch. Pretty much the same Arctic weather happened in England on January 16-17. A rough winter, just like Wisconsin. I blame global warming.

I was rolling my eyes yesterday that schools in Dane Co were closed for such a meager snowfall, but I was talking to people today who work in schools, elementary especially, and they think it was really just a de-contamination day. One of the people I talked to works as a sub, and she subbed Thursday, and said an elementary teacher with 22 normally had 11 on Thursday at the start, 9 at the end.

That means 2 kids vomited in class. Spew!

Didn't know the flu was so widespread in schools. It's nice to have kids in College and beyond.

Looking for recommendations for a good audiobook. I have a six hour drive coming up in a few weeks. Would like something that is twelve hours or more and has a good reader.

It was 75 degrees in camp south. Have to head to camp north tomorrow where it's supposed to be a balmy 50.

I enjoy and miss the XC skiing. I haven't experienced the fish skin era.

I read them all the time. The best is Caro's biography of LBJ but it is about 80 hours if you want a really long one.

I listen on my commute to Phoenix from Tucson, about 2 hours each way. Then we drive to California about once a month or so. Next time is next week. I have listened to Chernow's "Hamilton" which is good.

Novels, I like Neville Shute novels, and I listened to a series of the Bernard Cornwell novels about Wellington's army. The readers are very good at accents and the early Sharpe series novels are set in India and the reader goes from Scottish to English to India in seconds. It can get confusing.

Right now we are listening to Shute's "A Town Like Alice," which has a lot of Japanese war crimes in the first three chapters but gets lighter after that, We also have the Jordan Peterson book on "12 rules." and may listen to that. I have gotten through about three chapters.

Lots to choose from. The Caro biography is really the best.

Re McCarthy's admission that he was wrong:

"what possessed the Obama administration to submit such shoddy applications to the FISA court, but of how a judge — or perhaps as many as four judges — rationalized signing the warrants."

A little late to the party, Andy. Yours truly called BS on the judges on this very blog a while ago. The reason was and is simple: the Steele info was not only uncorroborated, it was uncorroboratable. No impartial judge could sign off on allegations sourced to unknown Russians, merely on the say-so of a British ex-spy that the FBI claims to trust.

How long, Andy, before you reveal that the judges are partisan scumbags just like the DoJ, FBI and CIA Dem Deep Staters?
