"This happens all the time. You meet somebody, you have a relationship with that person, and, on paper, it just seems completely logical and right...

"... and it is right, and yet for some inexplicable reason, you go and gravitate toward the person who is consummately wrong for you, and makes your life into a hell. And that still attracts you more. And had you settled for the person who was right on paper, you indeed would not have been happy."

You want to find somebody who gets your jokes, in the first place.

Woody Allen is a pervert.

The thing that boogles me is how Mr. Allen’s actresses keep getting better-looking.

Why is settling for the person who is right on paper a guarantor of unhappiness? Think of all the arranged marriages in which the husband and wife grew to love each other over the years. Is there anyone stupider than hip moderns? That's a rhetorical question.

I thought this was about my son-in-law.

By the time he is thirty he may be a grownup, he has made small bits of progress.

The grandchildren take after their mother - something to be grateful for.

I think Tolstoy wrote a book about this.

Woody Allen can no longer play a Woody Allen character. His frailty no longer suggests vulnerability and exposed nerves. Rather it seems indicative of an underlying pathology that one instinctively pulls away from. The recent Barcelona movie was successful because Javier Bardem played the Woody Allen role. Bardem can act out Allen's fantasies in a way that makes the male libido look healthy and vital. Sometime back there was a movie where Woody played Julia Roberts' love interest. It was very creepy.
