Henry — our James Dean of a commenter — fixes the metaphor written by TIME's Sal Mineo, Joe Klein.

Back here — beginning with a Joe Klein quote in italics —Henry writes:
Indeed, the Republicans have the pedal to the metal--rushing us toward a tragedy far greater than the California health care forum finger-biting...

If Klein slowed down his typing he could have worked a little with that image.

As it is, I see a car plunging into a severed finger. Scary!

How about this instead:

Indeed, the Republicans have the pedal to the metal--rushing us toward a tragedy far greater than a crashed car. Someone's going to get their leather jacket caught on the door handle and die. It's me! It's my rhetorical cuff caught on the hyperbolic handle of the cliche car! Aaaagh!

I did notice Klein's veiled threat that there could be an uprising and possible civil war if Republicans start to resist the Soros/ Demmocrats plans to remake free Americans into socialist serfs more acceptible to their coming UN rulers.

I'm glad he and his type are scared. Stepping on liberty should always be scary; hence the motto: "Don't tread on me."

I truly wish the physical violence and intimidation would stop on both sides, but not at the expense of liberty.

Someone needs to back down. We just disagree about who it should be. Klein feels the people should back down, but only because it's "those" people.

Hold it. A pro Obamacare guy bit the anti-guy's finger off. That is the Republican's fault how? Is Klein saying that his side is so crazy that Klein can't gaurentee that they won't engage in violence if resisted against?

The original Klein post was the greatest Althouse pose ever. You really outdid yourself Ann. That was awesome.

There seems to be a continuity problem in the film clip of the snagged cuff.

In the first cut, taken from the driver's view, the cuff is shown hooked on a door handle that points to the front of the vehicle, which might snare him.

Then the view from the dashboard shows a handle pointed to the rear of the vehicle, which would release him if he just bailed out of the car like Dean.

No?

Likewise, Klein should come to the realization that when life gives you lemons, "just say fuck the lemons and bail."

Oh Lordy, Henry if you're here, that was so funny that I was still laughing out loud the third time I read it!

I finally saw that movie about a year ago. It sucked. Bad. The directing consisted of handing actors scenery and telling them to chew on it. I've yet to see the fascination of James Dean since that's all he ever did. (The opening scene in the police station is so over-wrought it's hilarious.)

Another James Dean automotive metaphor may be more, er, apropos.

Somehow or another, his attention must have been distracted for just a moment, and his lovely but frail Poor-shee sporty car slammed into a big reliable station wagon driven by a Mr. Turnipseed.

Now, our current array of health care choices is unexciting and a little battered, but it's safe for the whole family to ride in and never leaves us stranded by the roadside. It is about to be center-punched by a lithe, sexy roadster with no luggage space, driven to distraction by the coolest guy in town.
