"Some Muslims said their situation felt more precarious now..."

"... under a president who is perceived as not only friendly to Muslims but is wrongly believed by many Americans to be Muslim himself — than it was under President George W. Bush."
[Eboo Patel, a founder and director of Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based community service program] explained, “After Sept. 11, we had a Republican president who had the confidence and trust of red America, who went to a mosque and said, ‘Islam means peace,’ and who said ‘Muslims are our neighbors and friends,’ and who distinguished between terrorism and Islam.”

Now, unlike Mr. Bush then, the politicians with sway in red state America are the ones whipping up fear and hatred of Muslims, Mr. Patel said.
So Bush was better, but somehow the problems are still the Republicans' fault.

Maybe this quote helps explain it? Republicans have "shifted completely away from the Bush administration line on relations with Islam and they've obviously made the political calculation that bashing Islam and Muslims is a winning issue for them," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who blamed the "tea party movement [for] liberating the inner bigot in people."

What a con man!

Not the Bush thing, but the "bigotry and fear" huckster!

I think that you can reliably identify a covert Muslim jihadi when they resort to gaming the bigotry scam.

So, the one thing that you can guarantee, based on this article, is that this Eboo Patel SOB is covertly linked to the jihadis in one way or another.

The jihadis know how to play the game!

And, we've got a phalanx of useful idiots who are ready and willing to be played.

Let's hear it, OmegaLiberal, garage, HenHouse, etc.

Of course, Robert Cookie isn't even hiding beneath the radar. He's pro-Hamas, pro-jihad and proud of it. That old Stalinist doesn't care what horse he's riding as long as he can wage war against the U.S.

Thank you for presenting a nice "non-biased" assessment piece for the right wing to smile about.

roesch, you are being used and lied to, but maybe you don't mind.

This nation was attacked by Muslims, we see them everyday burning our flag and doing whatever they can to provoke us, yet there have been virtually no retaliations against Muslim here. Even when Muslims continue to murder Americans on our soil and attempt to murder many more regularly. Still no retaliation in the streets.

Clearly, we have some of the most tolerant bigots ever known to mankind. Maybe we need a new word for them.

I get how annoyed people were at Bush constantly going on about the Religion of Peace but I've said before...

...he also was pretty clear about who the Enemy is and was more that willing to call it Islamic extremism or jihad.

Also, I always saw his Religion of Peace rhetoric as a direct response to Bin Laden's purposes, which was to radicalize the Muslim world by provoking us into attacking Islam in general. Bush refused to do that and insisted on framing the war issue to specifically exclude those people Bin Laden wanted to include.

Obama (and a whole lot of people who really like him) doesn't like to express things in clear black and white. It's anti-intellectual or something.

But what seems to be happening is that when he won't use those strong terms that Bush was willing to use, the lines become more blurred for everyone.

roesch-voltaire said...

I did mind that I was lied to about the need for war with Iraq, when I thought the enemy was in Tora Bora, and I am well aware that radical fundamentalist are a threat to my life style as well as that of the many Muslims-- the killing of Muslim by this group is a daily occurrence, but I do not consider myself at war with a billion and half of its followers.

Roesch,

How many times did Muslims attack the WTC in the name of Islam? How many times have Muslims attacked non-military American targets abroad in the name of Islam? How many times have Muslims attacked civilian targets around the world in the name of Islam?

This has absolutely nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats or votes, and everything to do with a so-called "extremist minority" that seems to be awfully large and able to kill thousands upon thousands of people worldwide in the name of their religion.

That's the reality. Address it or leave the conversation to adults and not the kids at Politico.

Right on cue, useful idiot HenHouse!

The braindead idiocy of the HenHouse and the other useful idiots is truly inspirational!

Why do you despise your own country, HenHouse?

Why do you keep strategizing for yet another successful jihadi attack on New York City?

I've known so many shitheads like you that think they are inspired by principle. That halo you like to preen long ago shrunk down and began to squeeze your skull. That must be the source of the brain damage.

At the core, you are so rotten, and so traitorous... and it's just stupidity. There's nothing obviously to be done about it.

You still haven't trumped your "Muslims are the new Jews" idiot line. That may have been one of the top ten stupid statements in the history of the internet.

Looking to beat that one today?

As Henry Miller said: "Against stupidity, we are helpless."

I can wait to read the next line of idiocy you write. Inspired, suicidal idiocy of your sort is a form of genius.

Is this the evidence of superior IQ you've been boasting about?

You have reached the virtual zenith (or is it nadir?) of idiocy, HenHouse. I salute your grand, eloquent stupidity.

Any words of advice for the tens of thousands of New Yorkers likely to die from a dirty nuclear bomb attack in the next decade?

Synova said...

For a moment, consider the "ground zero" mosque.

The lines are blurred. It doesn't even matter to the "right thinkers" if those wanting to build the community center are "good" Muslims or "bad" Muslims, because those distinctions are simplistic, the only thing they can do is promote the building to prove they're among the "right thinking"... everyone who isn't is a bigot and motivated by bigotry.

There is no middle ground and no nuance. The person who thinks that the community center is *rude* or points out that those promoting it are *insensitive*, well they're just as much a hateful bigot as anyone else.

But pushing all reasonable people into the extremist bigot camp isn't the cause of the increased tension or feelings of insecurity, of feeling "more precarious" now, oh no, because people have only two stark choices... right thinking or hateful bigotry.

Darn good thing that Obama refuses to name Islamic extremism, terrorism, and fundamentalist jihad. Can't have that simplistic black and white crap when we could be thoughtful instead.

Bah.

bagoh20 said...

"I do not consider myself at war with a billion and half of its followers."

Neither do those being called bigots. What people believe and what the left thinks and says they believe have nothing in common. It's a lie, a ploy, a strategy employed because it's easier to hate people when you imagine them as evil.

Hate and bigotry is what it is, even if it's in the name of hating bigotry. The practice of bigotry has always required a dishonest assessment of the other.

The last year has been nothing if not an exposure of the dishonest labels the left has tried to attach to people who have shown no violence nor hatred, even in the face of unrelenting provocation.

This can no longer be claimed as ignorance. At this point it can only be unalloyed agenda and hatred. Congratulations for becoming what you despise.

Hey House: If people are frightened of Muslims, guess whose fault that is??? Not the Tea Party folks, but the Muslims themselves, who go around blowing up buildings, beheading people, stoning women, and generally, committing mayhem and murder. After all, Mohamed said on his deathbed to his followers: "Kill all the nonbelievers." So why would not people be just a tad nervous about Muslims anyway.

HDHouse - "the only anti-muslim shouting seems to be coming from the right side of the aisle if you haven't noticed. simply, the republicans have played the religious hate card"

Leave it to Hen House. If you don't LOVE all religions as moral and societal equals....why, by the Sacred Parchment Itself..you are a hater! A hater!

Since all religion is, is simply ideology with a divine component to it, then by Hen House's logic, any criticism of facism and communism must also be "playing the hate card".

The Left has gravely overplayed the hate, bigotry, racism cards. At one point, it was sufficient to trump all debate and send the accused surrying to defend themselves that God forbid, they weren't such racist, bigoted, hateful folks and BEG liberals to forgive them. Then we got to the point where the rest of society just shut down having a dialog with the left since once race, bigot, and hate cards got thrown - people finally recognized it was just an aggressive tactic.

Now we are at the "fuck you" point.

Jews got to this point when they overplayed the "anti-Semitism" card in Europe. As in, any criticism of Israel or the greedy pack of lawyers suing guilty European nations, towns, and companies for "Holocaust reparations" went to the "Anti-Semite" well once too often.

The Green Movements screams of massive looming doom unless we went to a totalitarian Green-controlled life down to what lightbulbs and sandwich wrappers we could use? Credibility was shredded in Al Gore's hysteria, uncovery that politicians like him and big company's were positioning to get wealthy by controlling a cut of the action on society's goods and services mix. The East Anglia scandal that kept on spreading. Now the BP spill - billed as the "Greatest Environmental Disaster in History" with all the screams of dead oceans, species exterminations, fishing banned 200 years, and a biodegradable dishwasher-like cleaner billed as "Corexit, the Dispersant of Doom!!!!!!!".

Now we have the Left positioning as ardent Muslim defenders.

To me, that is a huge mistake on the part of the Left. It erases Bush's stupid "Mullahs and women of cover are just folks like us" mess. And Bush's naive belief that Muslims just want democracy, our precious Sacred Parchment as their own Constitutions, and plenty of free nation-building from America's unlimited wealth.

It aligns the Left as "owners" of Muslim behavior as the prime defenders of Muslim actions.

The left has run out of bullets, but they keep on cocking and firing anyway. The problem for them is that once you aim and pull the trigger, the fact that the chamber is empty doesn't change your intent. We know who hates now, we know what they will do to hold on to power. The Democrats have lost their minds, not to mention their political sense. Next goes the trust, and with it the power.

Synova said...

The question isn't if Mr. Patel's perceptions are valid, only if they are common or uncommon. "Some Muslims said their situation felt more precarious now..."

So is "some" just a couple odd fellows or a general, significant feeling?

RV wants to say it's because of political calculation and HD continues to insist that everything happens in a vacuum and blames "whisper campaigns", but neither for even a moment addresses the perception as something important in itself.

People behave according to their perceptions far more than they do according to facts.

But I've never noticed that the party of "nuance" and thoughtfulness ever considers that.

Bush took a lot of grief from conservatives and got no credit from liberals, but if moderate Muslims and the Religion of Peace was a fantasy, darn it, he was going to create it simply through the power of repeated assertion because it was *necessary* that it exist.

Obama gives us mush.

Why, we've pay to renovate and repair mosques and minarets overseas. We've paid for an evangelical preacher to travel overseas and spread the word of how kind and gentle Islam is; well, an Imam is a kind of preacher, kind of. We maintain a strict separation of church from state except when we wish to bind Islam to the state in the name of expediency, as long as a Christian religion is not involved. So, I guess we can beg forgiveness from the Muslims we've grievously injured from our callous and indifferent ways.

Response to Synova: Good question. I support the mosque builders and I don't support the Koran burners.

However, as far as 1st amendment rights go, I support both.

The reason I support one and not the other is simply this:

both the acts will raise emotions, create angst, and pain. The difference however, is in the bigots among both sets.

The bigots among one set will rant and rave and rail and hold protests and rallies and make more hurtful comments, escalate the tensions..and ..hopefully, not much beyond that. Basically, even the so called bigots won't act THAT bigoted.

The bigots in the other set will rant and rave and rail and hold protests and rallies and make more hurtful comments, escalate the tensions..and ..attack businesses, shatter glass store fronts and kill innocents that they perceive are aligned in ANY way to the "other" group.

So..again, to answer your question - why do I support the mosque builders but not the Koran burners? because America is better than Saudi Arabia. And because less bigoted is better than more bigoted.

I hope that answer, from a liberal, goes some way towards answering your very good question.

Ankur said...

Having said that, if the church in Florida decides that the only way they can be heard is by burning Korans, then by all means they should go for it. And, one hopes that being a house of worship, they will have the maturity to recognize and accept the consequences of their decision as well - even if they are not the perpetrators of the hateful events that may or may not occur as a result of the burnings.

Again, to be clear, if their actions result in any violence - it is NOT their fault. it is the fault of the perpetrators. It is still, however, causally related.

I think the problem is that we have a terrorist incident every 3-6 months within the United States. They don't all work, but they keep happening.

This much violence out of such a tiny minority is why the majority has become hostile to Muslims. Scratch that-- this much political violence. It's not just going postal.

We can argue that it's irrational to blame a group for the acts of individuals, but I think that the continuing terrorism is what explains the growing hostility. If the terrorism wasn't there, or if it was foreign, it would be different.

I think that the relatively effective ban on talking in public about Muslim terrorism in the US during the last ten years simply pent up a lot of anger that otherwise would have worked itself out. Media simply will not deal with the topic even now.

That Obama's presidency is floundering because he has chosen to emulate rather than repudiate Bush's pandering to the right-wing lunatics who have taken over the Republican party, that he has chosen to maintain and expand most of Bush's war policies rather than condemn them and seek criminal investigations of those who effected them, that he is as in thrall to the corporate swine who are destroying our economy as was Bush--in short, that Obama looks bad now does now rehabilitate Bush even in appearances, as his failures are a continuation of Bush's failures.
