"8% Rate St. Patrick’s Day As An Important Holiday."

Says Rasmussen.

Chez Meadhouse, we rate St. Patrick's Day as in important birthday.

Happy birthday, John.

Yeah but 92% use it as an excuse to have a party and get drunk. It's the day everyone is a little Irish.

But no, it's not "important" just fun.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Any day that allows for the celebration of beer is damned important:

Look at me - I'm Irish!

I also think we should have more holidays that incorporate the embodiment of other cultures' stereotypes into ourselves.

It's better than the alternative,...

Is this the day Obama got green behind the ears?

Fair and Tender Ladies

Cherish the Ladies sang it once at an Imus remote on St. Patrick's Day, and Imus told them he wanted more upbeat stuff.

On their Woman of the House CD.

My mom was 1/2 irish and she insisted on celebrating it as if it were someone's birthday. R.I.P. Bette. I know you would have totally enjoyed the day.

I think Heidi Talbot did the song on Imus, which was better than the CD.

She belts it out without vibrato and on key.

The CD seems to be 10 tracks of noodling around plus that one, divided up with less good members of the group.

I think it's a good thing to remember, if you're of the persuasion, what your forebears endured to come here and establish themselves.

And. as I said last night, that part of the reason they came here was religious freedom and that's still under fire.

Otherwise, it's like everybody has found it necessary to celebrate Cinco De Mayo in the last 20 years or so.

PS Happy Natal Day to your son, Madame.

Happy Birthday, John.

St. Patrick's day is big in Baltimore with a parade, parties, waiter races with green beer, bagpipe bands strolling through eateries, etc. Here in East Tennessee it's hardly noticed.

If it wasn't for St. Paddy's Day parades all those Sean-nós girls would have no reason to wear those enormous wigs. That's gotta be worth something to the national economy.

And the beer drinking... think of the multipliers -- barley growers, farm real estate, tractors and reapers, the hops growers, the brewers and truckers, not to menstion the chemical companies that make the green food dye. Heck, how often would that crap sell if not for Coithrige Pádraig?

Happy b'day, John Althouse Cohen.

It'll be important next year after Obama beats the 'inevitable' Romney. I'll feel like at least the winner is a bit Irish.

Just a few weeks ago the meme was the inevitable Obama. Then a string of poll results and now Romney's the inevitable one.

Beads of sweat on the upper lip, eh pysch?

Check out St. Patrick's day in Savannah GA. It's closer to East Tennessee and possibly larger than Baltimore or New York--no kidding. Google it.

I like it because most people don't rate it an important holiday, making it extra special to celebrate it. We're having a big party this evening. All the American St. Patrick's day fixings like Corned Beef, etc. Plus, I made Guinness ice cream, which is absolutely delicious and makes a person happy indeed (the trick is not to use the normal recipes which call for cooking it--just pour a whole bottle into the mix).

It's also a bit special for obvious reasons. It's my name day!

Plus, Patrick was a pretty amazing guy.

Happy birthday, John.

as for St Paddy's day, my lady and always celebrate with corned beef and cabbage and a pint of Guiness.

I always claim to Scot-Irish on St Paddy's day--love to drink (Irish) but hate to pay (Scot)

'Is that the Liverpool Echo?' said Patrick.

'It is.'

'How much would it be to put an ad in your paper?'

'Five pounds an inch,' replied the receptionist.

Too dear!' snapped Patrick.

'Why? What are you selling?'

'A ten-foot ladder,' said the Irishman, and banged the phone down.

Why would this be an important holiday is Wisconsin? We're overrun with Scandihoovians, not Irish.

16 Mar was St. Urho's day, the saint who drove all the grasshoppers out of Finland. He's the MAN.

In school we'd wear red, and a sprig of cedar to celebrate the sauna (that's "sa-oo-na," idiots, not "sawna." Finnish has no diphthongs. Show a little respect.) We'd tell Finlander jokes all day, including the best we'd saved up. Finns always laugh uproariously at themselves, and find it normal. Pretentious windbags--not so much.

So, to widen your cultural experience, here's just ONE description of a St. Urho's day celebration, from Finland, Minnesota; lest we forget....

Annual St. Urho's Day celebration set for this weekend, with a political twist

Even the 37th Annual St. Urho’s Day celebration in Finland isn’t safe from political campaigning. But at least for this weekend’s events, it’s all in good fun. “The Purple and Green Party (purple for the Minnesota Viqueens, and green for the GREEN BAY PACKERS) National Convention” is the theme of this year’s celebrations.

Event Coordinator Honor Schauland says the theme reflects the political season that is upon us, but also pokes fun at Finland’s lack of a mayor. “We kind of have this running joke of who is the mayor of Finland,” Schauland said. So naturally an honorary mayor will be elected this weekend. And because it’s an election year, “it only makes sense to have St. Urho run for president,” Shauland said.

The event has been weeks in the making, with a float workshop taking place last weekend. Kids also decorated campaign badges and ballot boxes for the big mayoral election. Take a look at the Green and Purple Party Charter to see if you get a feel for what this weekend’s events will be like.

We, the people of Finland, MN, in order to choose the perfect mayor, acknowledging the pitfalls of the traditional two-party system, and to promote the general welfare and further the pursuit of happiness in our region, do hereby proclaim the birth of a new political party. This party shall be named the Green and Purple Party, and you are all invited. The party shall hold a convention, the Green and Purple Party National Convention, which shall take place on March 17, 2011 at High Noon on Highway 1 in Finland, Minnesota for all to participate in democratically.

The Green and Purple party platform is as follows: One Human, one vote. Votes by grasshoppers shall not be counted.
A cord of wood in every woodshed
Free fillet knife sharpening
Required photo fishing ID for all Canadians within our borders
Amnesty for all users of the snowmobile bridge from the summer of 2011
We must choose a number for the Lax Lake Road and stick with it
Cash for Klinkers
A longer deer hunting season
Family planning for moose
A national holiday shall be declared when the Vikings and Packers play each other
All pool tables shall be purple (objections were raised but shouted down because you're in Minnesota, ya know)
Stringent action to take care of the Tourist Threat Free beer on Sundays
Free beer on Mondays
Free beer on Tuesdays…you get the idea

Numerous seats are available in the coming election. Don’t be afraid to throw your hat into the ring! Remember, if the clowns in power can get away with it, so can you! Seats available include:
Township Supervisor
Township Clerk
Mayor
Vice Mayor
Bar owner
Busdriver
Congressional Representative for the 8th District Saint
Multiple cabinet positions

The sky is the limit! If you want to run, we will vote for you!
