"The Shame of the Universities."

An alternate title that would work for 2 recently published books, according Michael Barone. (Both are books I've blogged about before: Greg Lukianoff's "Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate," and Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor's "Mismatch/How Affirmative Action Hurts Students It’s Intended to Help, and Why Universities Won’t Admit It.")

Via Instapundit, whose own "Shame of the Universities" book is referred to in Barone's article.

They do seem to have become less about education than indoctrination.

The left dumped the concept of honor long ago, so how can the universities be shamed?

We're now far into the "keep pretending it will all work despite the mounting evidence" phase of our coming cultural paradigmatic revolution.

Our past affluence has enabled us to drag this phase out much longer than past societies.

Take student loans as an example: the babyboomers mantle of leadership has resulted in an explosion of administrators compred to teachers, the advent of student loans to pay, and the imposition of non-discharge terms in the student loans.

The boomers told their children to get a good eductation adn then literally enslaved their children in non-dischargable debt, so the boomers could continue to live big on campus.

And they said that the "free love" movement wouldn't hurt anyone.

They didn't know or want to admit that "free love" hardens one's hart, and the evidence of that hardness is all around in how enslaved their children are, if the boomers care to look.

Dinosaurs. They better hurry and get their bonuses, because their business model is ending. Who in his right mind is going to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year and take out huge loans, when one can learn all the material online for free, and then take a proctored accreditation exam? What employer in his right mind would prefer the college student who spent four years having a good time in the gym and women's studies classes, over the obviously self-motivated student who can prove that he actually knows the material?

Quayle: I don't know about others, but my kids could only borrow a small fraction of their money in govt. loans. Any other loans required a cosigner and are at credit card rates. Most enslave their PARENTS (who want to give their kids a good education) with Parent Plus Loans, which I am saddled with and which will essentially be the estate that my kids will inherit. It's a total boondoggle!

MikeR: How will student teachers and music majors do online classes? Chemistry (like me)? Engineering? Not all classes can be taught remotely.

Universities are like any other orthodoxy. They will never admit that their ideas and premises were wrong to begin with. So they will stumble on, getting the rewards of the federal purse strings and remain whores in the process. They have no shame and they will deny the ever did.

The true shame of the Universities is that highly-educated, intelligent and capable adults have chosen to devote their considerable abilities to the task of swindling a generation of children into inescapable debt, simply so that they could continue to enjoy the soft life of the academic drone. What comes to mind is Randy Newman's "Sail Away".
