"Some scholars opined that the coffee house was 'even worse than the wine room'..."

"... and the authorities noted how these places could easily become dens of sedition. However, all attempts at banning coffee failed, even though the death penalty was used during the reign of Murad IV (1623-40). The religious scholars eventually came to a sensible consensus that coffee was, in principle, permissible."

Fitting that coffee came to Europe through the Port of Mocha.

Caffeine is one of the most addictive drugs known and creates bad headaches in withdrawals...but there is also caffeine in Tea and most Coca-Cola drinks so one need never suffer unless trapped in a hospital.

Religious leaders always trying to tell you what to do.

If you don't drink coffee, or tea, or cola, regularly, you can avoid the caffeine withdrawal headaches, because you never become addicted to it. That's what I do. It is slowly morphing into iced coffee season, however, and I do love me some iced coffee. Thankfully, the iced coffee at Union South sucks, so there's not much temptation to get it.

Well, you wanted the blog to be a coffee house, so all the sedition preached should be most gratifying.

I had a hankering for iced coffee yesterday so I whipped up a frappucino out of some ice cubes, cream and leftover coffee, with a splash of rum extract, mmm hit the spot. I live on iced coffee in summer.

Althouse is a coffee house.

Speaking of the Turks...

...Viennese bakers created the Croissant to commemorate Christendom's defeat of the Turks at the second siege of Vienna.

The Viennese, the Magyars and the Turks each claim that *they* invented Strudel.

It's too late in the evening to read that. It will keep me up. I'll get to it in the morning.

Headaches induced by "coffee withdrawals" is an outer space alien concept to me.

I don't keep track but there must have been days when I went w/o coffee and I don't remember those days marked by such a traumatic? event as a headache.

I'm not saying people don't have them... I'm saying I don't remember having them.

I checked up on how Laura Bush sat as she was photographed during the 9/11 national cathedral interdenominational service...

I afraid of what I might find...

Laura had her legs crossed in one.

But Still, I think Althouse was on point saying how Michelle appeared to be sitting. I don't know how to describe it.

Coffee really needs a tobacco smoke to get the best results. And chocolate is a caffeine source too.

Starbucks expreso shots and mocha served in a smoking section like the Cigar Store has outside, now that would be mine and Mohammed's idea of Heaven.

"Caffeine is one of the most addictive drugs known and creates bad headaches in withdrawals."

The first time I tried to quit smoking, I also gave up coffee, since I thought having a morning cup of coffee without a cigarette was impossible. I got the worst headache of my life. It was so bad I couldn't work. I found a closet somewhere in the office and crawled into it, hoping for death. I thought it was nicotine withdrawal. No, it was caffeine withdrawal.

When I finally succeeded in giving up cigarettes, some 15 years later, I forced myself to drink the coffee without the morning smoke.

I gave up cigarettes but I can't give up coffee. Quitting smoking caused enough misery. I'll not put myself through that wringer ever again.

Say what you will about the religious scholars, but they quite correctly identified the potential of coffee houses for facilitating sedition. The present Grand Mufti in Saudi Arabia warns that free mixing of the sexes will lead to increased decadence and adultery. He is quite correct also.

Diet Coke with Splenda(tm).

I wish someone would make unsweetened sodas so that people could sweeten to taste. I like the sweetness level of a Coke for colas and that of a ginger ale for everything else. Root beers have almost twice the sugar of a ginger ale, and EVERYTHING artificially sweetened tastes sweeter than sugary root beer. (Is Splenda made from powdered My Little Pony or something?)

Maybe I could learn to make my own soda - a useful skill in case Michael Bloomberg gets appointed FDA director.

Police shootout in Watertown Mass with the persons of interest the FBI identified last night as the possible Boston Marathon Bombers.

One of the persons of interest is dead as well as one of the persons of interest.

Live coverage of the firefight.

I meant a police officer... as well as the "black hat" person of interest. dead.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

The now diseased "black hat" person of interest arrived at the hospital with what appeared to doctors as explosive shrapnel injuries.

"White hat" person of interest is still at large.

Thanks for that clarification...several "headlines" on Google News had it that he was "apprehended" ... I guess "dead" is a form of apprehension, eh :-)

Now I await publication of the dead guy's name...I haven't seen that yet. Yes, it will make a difference to many people.

Splenda is made from bacterially fermented sugars. The result is then purified, freeze dried, and powdered. Their first, and possibly only, plant is located near Mobile Al.

@ MadisonMan

Best way to make iced coffee is to simply get a coffee press (french press) and put in the appropriate amount of ground coffee & water and then put it into the refrigerator the night before.

The slow cold brewing process makes for an excellent cup. Something else that adds flavor is to use a coffee ice cream as your creamer.

So the leftwing media speculates openly about the possibiilty that the bombings were done by disaffected taxpayers, tea partiers, republicans, conservatives and white people. But can't bring themselves to admit that these are islamic terrorists like they usually are?

Yeah just another day in the life.
