"Masked gunmen opened fire in the offices of a French satirical newspaper on Wednesday in Paris... as many as 12 people... killed and 10 wounded."

The NYT conveys a police report.

Why attack a satirical newspaper? What was your first thought there?
[The satirical weekly] Charlie Hebdo has been attacked in the past for satirizing Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Its offices were firebombed in 2011 after publishing a cartoon of the prophet on its cover promising “100 lashes if you don’t die laughing!”

The cover of the newspaper on Wednesday featured a caricature of Michel Houellebecq, a controversial novelist whose sixth novel, “Submission,” predicts a future France run by Muslims, in which women forsake Western dress and polygamy is introduced. On the cover, Mr. Houellebecq is depicted as a wizard and smoking a cigarette. “In 2022, I will do Ramandan,” he is shown saying.
"Ramandan" is a typo in The New York Times. Here's what the Charlie Hebdo cover looks like, with: "En 2022, je fais Ramadan!"
Charlie Hebdo, which prides itself on skewering a wide range of targets with garish cartoons and incendiary headlines, has long been vulnerable at its Right Bank headquarters, where it has weathered a firebombing, a lobby shoot-out and now a massacre.

The journal is part of a venerable tradition in France, deploying satire and insolence to take on politicians and the police, bankers and religions of all kinds, including this week a mock debate about whether Jesus existed or not.
Yes, you can see on that cover: "Jésus/A-t-il existé?" Maybe it was Christians with the Kalashnikovs.

ADDED: "[V]ideo, recorded by the French journalist Martin Boudot from a nearby rooftop as shots were fired — and the attackers shouted 'Allahu Akbar'... posted... by French state television":

My first thought was, gee, how many ethnic groups respond with violence when made fun or or criticized?

The world seems to be hating on Jews, but let me count all the violent responses and acts of terrorism committed by Jews against the nation in which they live. Hmmm. Same with Christians and other religious sects.

Banning the immigration of Moslems seems to me no different than banning entry from Ebola stricken countries. And why would any Moslem be surprised or not comprehend the rejection of more of their people being allowed into a country?

I reject the notion that it is a phobia. Meanwhile I will be heading to the largest Islamic country in the world in a few weeks.

I think you are wrong. I think the beliefs that led to this violence is central to the faith. The prophet has been mocked openly, hilariously, repeatedly by this magazine and that cannot stand.

This "bring them to justice", hang them from the Eiffel tower is a pretty thought, but how about putting the cartoons on the front page of every newspaper in the civilized world every day until these primitives heads explode?

I think your religion of peace is turning out to be an especially stupid and barbaric one.

Oh, and neither you or your children were murdered in France. Platitudes appear to be the defense of the members of the religion of peace who appear unwilling to step into the modern world.

Prediction: There will not be a march of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Paris in protest to this barbarity. Prediction: There will be platitudes heaped on platitudes which will be feasted upon at a gathering of the concerned.

This is bound to have an inhibiting effect on such publications......I don't know anything about this magazine, but my guess is that if they're a satirical magazine, they find most of their targets on the right. They were probably supportive of Snowden and Assange and hostile to those who prosecute the war on terror. Now that journalists are being murdered in their workplaces, I wonder if that fact will cause journalists to rethink their hostility to surveillance of mosques and the like........Probably not.

If you read the Hadiths they end with the death of Mohammad and he tells his followers to go out and spread Islam at the point of the sword. Which they then do In Europe. Of course Europe then gets blamed for the crusades. But that reaction ignores that Islam had in fact proceeded to wage war against the west for centuries. The crusaders try to take back the holy lands, and they are suddenly the imperialists. ignoring the fact that Islam itself took those lands.
At any rate, when people say that no such religions countenance violence in furtherance of the religion, I'm not sure they are aware of Islams long history of doing just that.

Spain actually expelled the last Moslems long after it expelled the Jews. The Moslems, unlike the Jews, were initially permitted to stay on per the terms of the final peace treaty, and they did hang on under various accomodations, official and unofficial, until the 17th century and the final comprehensive expulsion. The differences vs the Jews was that there were many more Muslims, and the Muslims were the bulk of the rural population in several regions and thus were far more difficult to move than the urban Jews and expelling them meant a heavy hit to agriculture, particularly in the estates of the nobility and church.

She claimed that the video she posted showed "Islamophobia" which it certainly did not. Very well. Live by the tribe, die by the tribe. A large Islamic population guarantees a segment of young males who will violently push for an Islamic state, and a magnitude more who will educate them that to do so is right, and will hide them from the authorities and fight the propaganda war on their behalf. Who will undermine and demoralize the host nation's faith, culture, society, economy, and welfare systems. Who will demand the right to vote, and proceed to vote for more immigrants of their own kind, and for more wealth from the host.

Kick them out. France for the French. Germany for the Germans. Holland for the Dutch. If the group dynamics are what they are, then the group must go.

Excellent question.

The Muslim's don't fear pork. They have turned it into a rhetorical weapon against the west. Ban the pork sausage! is just a way of undermining our resolve. Some mullah crying and babbling on the television about bacon left on his mosque's front door is a propaganda victory.

But the camera goes away, they garble a few chants and boom! problem solved.

The jihadist is, according to his faith, going to Allah. He can drink, smoke, rape, bugger a bloody hog if he likes and then piss on the Koran... and if he dies in the jihad, if he brings the entire world closer toward Dar-al-Islam... then he is favored by Allah.

You or I burying him in a pigskin makes no difference in the slightest. In fact, I imagine that the infidel befouling the remains of such a hero would just exalt the evil bastard higher.

Mockery on the other hand, is a great intellectual weapon, which is why they'll kill you for it where they won't kill you for throwing a pork chop. Mohammad with a turban bomb? Excellent. Death chant in "100 ways to die in the west" - we need 100 more films like that. Calling women in burqas 'ninjas' - keep it up. A perpetual intellectual (high and low) assault on Islam is absolutely essential. It's not sufficient, but it is essential.

Any writer or graphic artist must, at least for a second, think oh fuck, they could come for me if I don't watch out. They can say to themselves they'll be fine if they don't cross that line.

Where are the links of my very vocal and very recent support of Hamas? Did you lie?

You'd better get busy garage. I'm sure there are Minnesota muslims who could use your help for escorting in order to protect them from marauding Tea Party-ers and Christians.

You are just the sort of "courageous" soul who would excel in that role.

Oddly worded reply. If someone accused me of having vocally supported mass-murdering terrorist groups, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to say "no, I haven't" without needing to add "... within the last 12 months".

LOL

Links links he demands! Of course, this is the same moron who claimed to have asked many "simple and easy to answer questions" regarding Ferguson, and continued to demand answers to those questions even after being informed that he had never asked any questions!

In any event: here you go moron, playing your role perfectly of the purveyor of Hamas talking points:

Well Revenant, as garage might say, it's easy to see you probably never played contact sports in school.

Further, you probably attended schools that used modular buildings! (another of garage's bugaboos)

Matt, your link would work as well.

To Revenants point (somewhat), what's most interesting about garages responses to terror acts by Hamas and earlier today in Paris is his immediate and desperate need to shift focus away from the terrorists and then categorically criticize others (always non-muslims).

That garage does this so effortlessly and mindlessly creates a blindspot in his memory where his rhetorical support for such blood thirsty groups doesn't even register for him as something significant.

Thus his strange answer (as recognized by Revenant) and failure to recognize the rhetorical support he provides to these groups.

I would lay odds that even re-reading his own posts will lead him to ask "what's the big deal".

This is why, even though I am an atheist, I would get a tattoo of a cross. This is war, and they aren't going to let me go anyway. I would just like it clear which side I am on. The side of peace.

Muslims consider Christians and Jews people of the book. They have SOME consideration for them since they supposedly are a sister religion. (Even though the jews and Christians perverted the religion with their foulness - even though they were there for centuries before Mohammad was even born). For that they get to be dhimmis and pay the tax to the muslim state for "protection". We can see how that works out for Jews and Christians in the ME.
But YOU? as an atheist? Islam doesn't play that. You'd be the first to go.

Scott said...

It is stunning to see Muslims on the Internet defend or at least excuse the attacks as if they were the victims. The monsters.

I'm not sure I want to associate with Muslims anymore.

Anonymous said...

I laughed when I saw a tweet earlier today from "God" saying, in effect, "I am the Lord God of All Creation and I can take a fucking joke."

But Muslims can't. Devout Muslims are not all violent, but they certainly don't do snark and irony. They don't find religion funny. They don't think diversity or tolerance are wonderful values.

In Philadelphia in 1725, anybody who made such a joke would have been flogged in the public square by those nice, gentle Quakers. And the onlookers would have thought it a just punishment for blasphemy.

But, because modern Christians and Jews are now far removed from that mindset themselves (although the dreary atheist crusaders would have you think otherwise), it's difficult for even religious Westerners to grasp that sort of mentality.

If it's hard for religious Christians and Jews, it's next to impossible for the secular leftists who make up our elite class. They lack the imagination to understand conservatives, for God's sake, so how on earth can they wrap their minds around the existence of people who are willing to kill and die in the name of something they believe to be an illusion?

They can't. And so over and over again, we have the idiotic spectacle of media people and pols rushing to tell us that these attacks and murders are not caused by Islam, when the terrorists themselves claim otherwise.

"I have close Muslim friends who aren't that religious and they're American. They are own our side. "

I just hope they aren't like the Muslim limousine drive from Irvine, about 5 miles north of me, who decided one day to drive to LAX and start shooting at the El Al counter.

After the gunman fired 10 bullets at the crowd, one of El Al's security guards, who was unarmed, managed to knock him down. Meanwhile, El Al's security officer, Chaim Sapir, ran to the scene but was stabbed by the assailant with a knife. Despite this, Sapir managed to draw his pistol and kill the gunman. The assailant was identified as Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, a 41-year-old Egyptian national who immigrated to the United States in 1992. Hadayet arrived in the United States from Egypt as a tourist.

Hadayet had a green card which allowed him to work as a limousine driver. He was married, and had at least one child. At the time of the shooting, Hadayet was living in Irvine, California.

Sudden jihad syndrome. Like the one that took down The Egypt air Flight in New York.

The report by the National Transportation Safety Board is due to be published shortly. It will conclude that el-Batouty forced the New York-to-Cairo plane down. The report will not attribute motives to him as to why he took the action nor will it suggest that he deliberately crashed the flight.

Just more "workplace violence."

Saying "I rely on God", he switched off the auto-pilot and pushed the plane into a dive.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Well here we actually have a case of "hands up don't shoot".

Didn't do the unarmed French policeman much good. He was wounded and down on the ground and Abu Mohammed Goatassaulter finished him off with a burst from an AK 47. Where's Al Sharpton when you really need him?

French police are mostly unarmed. Up against two or three guys with AK 47's all they have to protect themselvesis begging and pleading and ol Abu Mohammed Goatassaulter and his ilk aren't much into mercy.

Still there's a certain innocence--or maybe just willful ignorance--in a society where the police are unarmed. I visit England frequently and I was used to seeing unarmed bobbies on foot patrol. It was a real shock the first time I saw a couple of London policemen carrying machine pistols while patrolling in Grosvenor Square outside the US Embassy. But the world has changed, and it's time for cops to arm up.

The most guns I ever saw in one place not a gun store was in England. Tony Blair's motorcade had just gone through an underpass I was waling though and there were cars parked around seemingly randomly, but as soon as his motorcade passed, all of these parked cars turned out to be full of men with all kinds of what looked like automatic weapons that sped off as soon as he passed. I guess it would have been a good place for an ambush.

Unarmed bobbies can call for armed backup on pretty quick notice. Law enforcement there has plenty of guns.
