"I've got to be honest with you. I've got to lay it out on the table: I also went to the bathroom."

"I know. I have to admit it. I guess other men are allowed to go to the bathroom, but women, what can we say?"

Said Bernie Sanders, reacting to Donald Trump's "I know where she went. It's disgusting. I don't want to talk about it."

Sanders also said: "I don't know what his relationship with women has been like, but he has discovered that women go to the bathroom, and it's very upsetting for him." And: "This is a guy who wants to be president of the United States. He must have a very unusual relationship with women."

ADDED: I just want to observe that Trump was responding to his audience, which was pushing him to talk about it, and he was saying he didn't want to talk about it. He wanted to riff on her disappearance from the debate stage, not get into the specifics about the bathroom, and arguably, what he was calling "disgusting" was talking about peeing, not peeing per se. Look:

Sanders also said: "I don't know what his relationship with women has been like, but he has discovered that women go to the bathroom, and it's very upsetting for him."

That's a funny line. And, of course, there are lots of jokes about bathrooms and the differences between men and women.

It's interesting that Sanders does not get called on all the lies that he tells, because he too is a congenital liar. I guess no one really takes him seriously, except his supporters, who are not going to object.

I read on Instapundit (which I know that Ms. Alhouse reads) about NPR using the term "schlong" with regard to Ms. Ferraro's defeat. Liberal hypocrisy is much discussed these days. I turned to Ms. Althouse for further insight, but I am disappointed. Why it is "not news" when NPR does it and front page news when Trump does it (pretty much the exact same thing - male describes female candidate losing). Is there a "nuance" that I am missing?
Yes, I know that Trump is news and NPR is not, but the furor is supposedly based on the distasteful and disgraceful use of the term, which, it seems to me, would be the same on NPR or by Mr. Trump. Is this the "faux news" I hear so much about? Something seems to be faux.

Sanders has run an ideas-based campaign (nutty and dangerous as those ideas may be), and has gone out of his way to avoid cheap-shot attacks even when the press invites him to do so. I appreciate the guy's style, although I'm relieved his support is so limited.

I love the idea that Sanders supporters are going to flock over to Trump in the general election. Never gonna happen. A few dim-witted union thugs will cross lines, sure, but Trump contempt couldn't be stronger in that crowd.

It is increasingly clear to me that a good portion of the Republican base does not want to wield real power. They railed against Boehner, but when the time came to step up, they begged Ryan to take the difficult job and are now trashing him from the safety of the sidelines and bleachers. Courage. Supporting Trump is just another reflection of this. You can get to talk tough, but Trump's general election weakness means you never have to worry about actually taking responsibility.

My mom is a Hillary Supporter. She thought Obama stole her nomination last time, and she's pretty pissed that he won. She thinks its because Hillary is a women.
We had a discussion about Trump. I was saying that even though he often makes blanket statements that are indefensible it seems like the democratic operatives in the media are often looking to find the latest example of his outrageousness, and jump on it even though its often nothing.
I made the point about how he used the word Shlonged to describe her losing last time and how that was being viewed by some as sexist. First off, that is not sexist language. NPR made an issue out of it, and it came out that someone described Geraldine Ferraro/Walter Mondale as getting shlonged during their election.
I wasnt' aware of the word being used that way. But regardless, its not sexist and Trump didnt' even coin the phrase. Not even sure if NPR did. Shlonged can be used to describe Geraldine Ferraro Or Walter Mondale or both.

Then my mom said "She wasn't shlonged. She was butt fucked!"
If Trump had said THAT, would it have been viewed as non sexist?
So I asked her "So basically, you think Hillary was shlonged during last election. You've basically been telling me that they screwed her because she was a woman since the last election" and she had to agree. Her description was worse the Trumps. She just thought it was the dems that shlonged her.

Trump +10; liberals making issue out of this -10

Such a distinction is lost on people trying to push gender identity politics or play various race/sexist cards.
Of course Trump was talking about discussing specifically what Hillary was doing in the bathroom, and that's what he found disgusting.
Its funny though that lefties will be convinced, that Bernie's interpretation is the correct one.

I think that you have to keep in mnd that Hillary was late getting back before a national audience. This just isn't done. She just showed how much respect she had for her national audience. They were watching to support her, and she owed them no loyalty, etc. think about the last time that someone love on TV was late getting back from a commercial break - I can't off the top of my head. So, what we essentially had here was Trump calling her on this faux pax of hers, and her supporters getting their own panties in a knot for him calling out her literally having hers down (when she was supposed to be on stage). Neither she, nor they, her supporters, take criticism of her well at all. Win or lose, it is going to be a long hard campaign for them, esp since most of the nice Republcans are either out already, or headed in that direction.

I agree with the posters above who pointed out that it isn't peeing, but talking about it that is an issue. Growing up in middle class America, the women I dealt with wouldn't go pee, but rather would go the the bathroom, women's room, ladies room, etc. nice upper middle class women just didn't tell the rest of us what they planned to do in the bathroom. And realistically, Hillary comes out of this culture like Trump does, and likely doesn't tell everyone around her what her specific plans are there. Bill, being raised trailer trash might, but not his middle class wife.

The reason that I think that this is a class thing is that my partner doesn't seem to have this cultural resistance to telling me in public that she is going to pee. There are just a lot of cultural markers that she just doesn't see, ranging from why camel hair coats go with gray slacks to this. She does make up for it in a lot of ways though, including being the best cook ever.

You can parse that any prog way you would like but we would like to have the parsing done in public to see where you really stand in the "war on women."

By the way, using all caps and bold type on the internet is generally the sign of someone with a loose screw.

Eric and Trumpsters,
What has been a pattern with many conservatives and Republicans is this: They misunderstand and underestimate the power of a voting bloc that doesn't like misogyny, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. In 2008 and in 2012 Conservatives and Republicans were in meltdown and didn't know what hit them. They haven't learned a thing and this autopsy will be even more telling as to what went wrong. In a national election in which more Americans come out to vote, what conservatives have become will be resoundingly rejected. There will be tears and gnashing of teeth and I'll be sure to say "I told you so". But by all means keep up the magical thinking that most Americans think the way you do.They don't.

No, professor, I beg to differ on the relevance of the use of "schlonged" by Neal Conan on NPR.

There are lots of Yiddish phrases, in various ranges of blueness, that I have used. I love Yiddish. "Schlonged" was never something I said, but of course I am not from Queens. At first, I thought it was very weird the way that Trump used it. And given my lack of familiarity, I thought that it might really be a gross mistake on Trump's part. (Even weirder, and completely inexplicable, was his overdrawn riff on it being "disgusting" where Mrs. Clinton went to the bathroom. That's not even tv comedy. It's not local-cable comedy. It's a drunk-guy-in-Vegas-at-4 am riff.)

But Trump's defense -- and you have no idea how it hurts me to defend Trump -- is that "schlonged" is what a lot of NY guys call a comprehensive beatdown. Whether its root Yiddish origin is "penis" is of no consequence to me.

The notion that one of NPR's grandest grandees, Neal Conan, used the term without anyone batting an eyelash really IS of importance. Along with all of the NY guys who regularly say it.

I hope I never have to say this again, but on the sole issue of "schlonged," I think Trump is blameless. Well, not blameless (it's a goofy word choice) but at least not out of bounds.

Trump is on his own, for that cringe-inducing bathroom humor. And of course I carry no brief for his other 1,001 ghastly insults, reversals and idiocies for this (holiday-shortened) week.

Misogny: would that be the view that men can use underlings for their sexual pleasure? In the office? Or is misogny the act of letting that go? And as to racism I think we could look with interest at the Clinton's in SC in her original march to her not-to-be coronation? snip: "Speckhard and Yayla found these defectors, all of them originally from Syria, on the Turkish-Syrian border. To a man, they had horrific stories to tell. Take, for instance, this account from one of the defectors (names were withheld or replaced with pseudonyms) about how ISIS executed prisoners where he was stationed:

There is a well by the name of Hute. There they cover the eyes of the prisoners and tell them, ‘You are free now, just walk now, but don’t open your eyes.’ They walk and fall into the well. It smells horrible because of all the corpses inside the well. I know that over three hundred people were thrown into that well.

According to Speckhard and Yayla's sources, such cruelty is central to ISIS's strategy. The group uses fear of atrocity to keep the population in line, and to intimidate other armed groups. One fighter recalls how ISIS used child suicide bombers to drive the Free Syrian Army (Jaysh al-Hur in Arabic) out of the city of Raqqa roughly two years ago (note: Daesh is another name for ISIS):"
