"Hinckley stocks up on cat food at PetSmart ($100 per visit); frequents Wendy’s, KFC, and Sweet Frog (he likes its yogurt)..."

"... and haunts used-record stores (recent purchases include David Bowie’s The Next Day). 'It can be boring at times,' he has said. Once, after seeing a Beatles cover band, Hinckley noted being turned off by Williamsburg’s 'conservative' crowd. At least one night per trip, Hinckley attends group therapy, including at a local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. His caseworker noted being 'floored' by Hinckley’s interest in the gatherings. 'It’s really refreshing to be in a group of people who aren’t completely out of their minds,' Hinckley once explained. 'Their mental-health problems are more like depression and anxiety. They can carry on regular conversations.' He described to a therapist how nicely he’d hit it off with one gentleman in particular: 'He’s my age. He has three cats. What else could I ask for?'"

Humanizing Hinckley — "How John Hinckley Lives Now."

The cat food is for the 2 dozen plus feral cats he feeds.

They let Hinckley out but I don't see Mark David Chapman ever getting paroled.

What?? No humanizing columns for Sirhan Sirhan?

I guess it is too late for Jeffrey Dahmers.

Still crazy after all those years.

He can’t be on the internet without his mother’s supervision, for instance, and isn’t allowed to circulate about town by himself if his stops aren’t prearranged.

I hate that shit.

Does he get to watch Taxi Driver?

I agree with madAsHell, fair is fair. If Hinckley is going to be allowed all sorts of freedom then ditto for Sirhan Sirhan.

" “Wow, is that how people see me?” he asked one of his therapists in 2011 after a psychotic 22-year-old gunman shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “I have these other aspects of my life that no one knows about. I’m an artist, I’m a musician. Nobody knows that. They just see me as the guy who tried to kill Reagan.”

Well, duh! Yeah, that is how you're seen, dude. When you choose to commit an act that notorious, that's exactly what's going to happen.

You brought it on yourself.

Reading the article, which is clearly an attempt to "humanize" and deflect blame, I still come away with these very disturbing points: He goes off the radar. He lurks the assassination section of the bookstore. He, (with the assistance of his "therapists"), blames his father's conservatism for his own actions. He thinks peoples' view of him as an assassin is wrong. He says he will do exactly as he pleases, with or without court permission. He has unmanaged narcissistic personality disorder, traits of which include a grandiose sense of self, a preoccupation with fantasies, a tendency to exploit people, and a lack of empathy. What could possibly go wrong?

But, I only tried to kill Reagan. A conservative! Not even a real human being! Hinckley declared to left-wing protester applause.

Dude, just hustle down to the lefty paradise of Venezuela and they will give you weapons with which to shoot the non-lefties!

I’m an artist, I’m a musician.

These days it only makes sense to note who isn't a self-decribed artist and musician.

@Quaestor, remember that one of Nancy Pelosi's goals in passing Obamacare was so that life's losers could be self-described artists and musicians, instead of being what they are -- failures at everything that they do.

Eff him. He should have been hung. Every day is a gift.

Hinckley was a bad shot, and missed 6 times while another shooter nearly made Bush the President. Since then political rivals have not been added to the VP slot.

Artist? Musician?
He's an assassin. Being an assassin who can play the banjo or paint is not really a point in his favor.

I hope somebody shoots him to impress Jodie Foster.

Exactly. I have been making the same observations and have asked the same question about deranged Donald Trump for more than a year, concluding that "In your heart you know he might."

"Well, I started tryin' to whittle a woman, but it looks like it's gonna be a Coke bottle, instead."

"I was talkin' to my cousin Walter and he said Reagan's shooter is allowed to walk out and about."

"I thought we were supposed to believe he is crazy."

"He IS crazy, he just gets to walk out and about."

"Well that's fucked up. Cousin Red was crazy but he still is in prison."

"Yeah, but that's because he didn't shoot the President, he just shot the guy molesting his daughter."

"Man, this is a fucked-up world."

"Yeah. I guess if someone is molesting your daughter and you shoot him, he better be the President."

"Oh man, this is a fucked-up world."

"And they're worried about MY guns."

"I guess if you're gonna shoot you best just keep on shootin'."

"Amen, brother: Amen."

I am Laslo.

missed 5 of 6

All the comments so far have missed the shocking, nefarious reason this article was published when it was.

The media humanizes a would-be presidential assassin at the same time that it frets there might be a dangerous, racist man might about to be elected president. No coincidence.

Anyone feeding feral cats should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws. That person, probably fully aware of the evil feral cats do to native songbirds and other small animals, is enabling the destruction of huge numbers of much more desirable animals and creating a haven for insect pests and parasites that cause serious illnesses in humans.

Either trap all the feral cats for miles around, or spay, neuter an return until a stable population exists, but stop feeding the damn predatory vermin!

gadfly said...

So Mikee thinks we should attack the feral cat problem but leave the feral songbird problem alone.
