Oh, & speaking of open secrets, I heard rumors that Levine was a pedophile from my classical musician friends & even the clerks at my favorite records stores over 30 years ago.

There were police cars and a fire truck down the street a week or so ago, lights flashing. Which probably meant another Heroin Kid OD'ed. If it were only police cars that would mean it was probably just an altercation that a bystander phoned in. The fire truck means someone was injured, and most of the injuries on the street are self-inflicted.

Sometimes a civilian gets beaten, but most of the violence happens in the alleys, not the street. And that violence is usually the Heroin Kids settling beefs amongst themselves. They don't bother to call the cops when someone is suspected of, say, stealing something from their sleeping bag: they take care of it, themselves.

It is not always the Heroin Kids, though. Sometimes it is an older homeless man -- or woman, they get homeless, too -- who is passed out drunk and blocking the sidewalk. Or one of the Ragged Crazies, who get belligerent with the Voices They Hear. And that civilian walking by fucking looks like the guy behind the Voices. He is the motherfucker, motherfucker. So: these people get firetrucks too, sometimes.

The firetrucks are hardest on the buses that have the street in their route -- the 71, the 73. Cars parked on either side and a firetruck, the bus can't make it through. So the people on the bus sit and wait. They will be late for their jobs. Or late getting home. Or just late in general. It is a relatively common occurrence: they just sit and listen to their earphones. Text. Or talk on the cell. Like the Ragged Crazies, you don't hear the Voices They Hear. But you are reasonably sure that -- for them -- there is someone on the other side of the phone.

Although I chose Kent State back in the 70s, most of my family went to The Ohio State University. Tonight they play Wisconsin. Safe game!

The National Guard played Kent State hard back then.

UGA just beat Auburn. So we are Wisconsin fans tonight because If Ohio State wins and gets into the playoffs, then some " Make TV Loot Great " guy will put Ohio State and Alabama in to get a great big TV audience." That would rob UGA.

We want Clemson, Wisconsin, Penn State and UGA. The Bulldogs can beat those 3.

James,

Indeed. And the school suffered serious enrollment issues afterwards. I was lucky there was room in their art department.

So now we know what the price for fake news is. 1/13th of Brian Ross's salary.

In one of Ann’s posts earlier today she contorted herself in eight different ways to back up Trump’s claim that the Access Holiwood tape was a fake.

Want to know how to know when Ann is full of it? Imagine if Bill Clinton was the one claiming such evidence was faked. Ann would do twenty posts taking him to task for it.

Want to know the obvious proof that the Trump tape was not faked? Billy Bush, who actually lost his job over it, is not making any such wild claim.

Ann knows that but she is always willing to intellectually contort herself to find a way to excuse Trump.

Ann always doubles down on Trump.

UGA put on a class act over Auburn. And now Bama fans are hoping Osu beats Wisc which might open the playoff to them.

I'm dizzy. Thanks, Meade.

OSU up two TDs.

The Badgers executed a tidy little 'pick-six' but they're losing ground fast. :-(

21 to 7. Could be sunset for Wisconsin.

Big Mike said...

traditionalguy, neither Penn State nor Ohio State will not be in the playoffs. If Wisconsin wins the four will be UGA, Wisconsin, the winner of the ACC title game, and Oklahoma. If Ohio State wins, then Wisconsin is out and ‘Bama is in.

This is a fair observation but no proof is necessary. The only person claiming it is fake is Trump and he doesn't have much credibility at this point. His claim is only of interest from a psychological perspective.

etbass said...

Big Mike is right except that would put two SEC teams in the playoff and the committe is not gonna let that happen IMO. So an inferior OSU will trump a better Bama b/c of politics.

mockturtle said...

I don't see how Penn State could still be in the playoffs.

Georgia & Ohio State nudge out Bama

Wisconsin appears to have NO passing game whatever.

Wisconsin is showing some life. Toi bad the officials won't let them capitalize.

Aspen
- to Katherine
I
High up in sky-country, some years ago,
These flickering trees semaphored their green
Into Colorado sky. They threw
Their shivered branch work against each mountain
To wake ghosts of pioneers and prospects.
Where oxygen is thinner than hammered gold
And landscape refines what blood’s beat expects –
My feet ate a mile of it and I felt old.

II
Aspen is a place never to be reached –
Its distance strains the eye to touch, possess.
A place of ghosted bones, now piled and bleached
As old shadows – but a place to profess
Faith in earth, its fullness a bowl, an ark
That holds a body’s unobtainable breadth;
So limbs sculpt out inner skin, outer bark;
So leaves shudder, cool, cooling, out of breath.

III
The aspen leaf is silhouette and echoes
The parent it shapes in the chaos of clay.
The shuffling winds tangle with the geckoes
And autumn’s fallen colors. That last day
In Aspen, I walked the rich, sad sunlight down
And heard time’s potter’s wheel hiss with desire:
The aspens grant us leave to see things barren
Like sunset’s match heads catching us, catching fire.

IV
This Aspen… This place can stake a firm claim
On easy hearts – its air flushes thin veins.
The ghosts of place always work their own time
In clay; here they parse out and form great planes
And angles, rising through low banks of cloud.
Their yielded catkins drop to burn, turn cold
In soil, wait and ignite again a hillside,
A green world shaken awake by dormant gold.

Well, kind of sad finish but it turned out to be a pretty good game after all. Guess the Tide will be celebrating.

Oh well. At least they ended up making a game of it. And this means Alabama is out of the playoff, yes?

There is a girl who comes into the bar sometimes; she seems to have a crush on me. Others have noticed, and I am not oblivious to it. She is cute, smart, and as I have said before: I like the skinny girls who aren't too skinny. She is one of those.

The aforementioned others tease me, ask me what I am going to do about it. By which they mean why don't I fuck her. It is a good question.

She has graduated, and is going for her Masters. Twenty years ago I probably would've loved to have sex with her: she has more than a bit of the Naughty Librarian to her. Of course, twenty years ago I was legally an adult and she was probably two years of age. And that is the problem, really.

I can't help but feel that, in some inchoate way, I would be corrupting her. Not like I would turn her out and pimp her: not that kind of corruption. And I have heard that pimpin' ain't easy. I just don't want to be a ready-made shortcut for her to become part of a more adult world. Where people drink a lot.

She is staying in the University Bubble for a few more years: the real world is waiting for her. So many things for her are still abstractions; there are assumptions waiting to be tested. My particular abstractions are not really a suitable substitute for the real world. And I too still have some assumptions to be tested of my own.

Yes: I think that she would fall deeply in love with me, and, if I left her, she would be damaged forever. It would be like 'Pretty Woman' but with Richard Gere never coming back for her in the end. Which would then be a much different movie. Because that's the kind of guy I think I am. I am the Richard Gere who won't come back. Alcohol may have impaired my ability to be humble.

So sorry for the Wisconsin fans, but tonight their sun has set.

@Birches, don’t know. Georgia, Oklahoma, and Clemson are in. Do they take a one-loss team that did not play in its conference championship game? Or do they take a two-loss team that is a major conference champion but which got blown out by an unrsnked team during the regular season? I’d go with ‘Bama, but that’s just my opinion. The upside of choosing Ohio State for the fourth spot is that you are guaranteed that the national champion also won its conference, which is a good thing in my opinion.

No way Wisconsin was going to convert on that 4th and 20. Surprised that Bucky made a game out of it.

Yancey Ward said...

Looking at the results tonight in football (I was pulling hard for Wisconsin tonight), I think the 4 teams in the playoffs will be 1.Clemson 2.Oklahoma 3.Georgia 4.Alabama. The only real doubt I have is if Ohio State can leapfrog Alabama with tonight's win.

Yancey Ward said...

Even worse for NowIKnow, there is literally no evidence other than 3rd person hearsay from an unnamed person that Trump questioned the tape. I didn't know that until someone pointed it out.

NKP said...

Wish Wisconsin won. 'Bama deserves to be in but probably won't because 'diversity'. THE Ohio State University was creamed in Round One last year. Expect a repeat.

The only person claiming it is fake is Trump and he doesn't have much credibility at this point.

Do we have a quote, a named source? Are you telling me that Trump is so precise in his language all of the time that there is no way he could have been misinterpreted by these sources? That it is impossible that he said something like "That wasn't the real me."?

The people who don't have any credibility are the people reporting on Trump. Inside anonymous sources. If he comes out and says it, or the source comes out with the precise words, that's one thing. But he apologized on the record of the statement. That's as much public record as we have on the matter from Trump.

You guys have just gone over the top in your hatred of him. You really should be more careful in your reasoning to maintain your credibility. LOL, you don't actually have any credibility to maintain.

Here's an article in the Federalist that ARM will refuse to read in order to maintain the purity of his. bubble. If Althouse is a mystery to any of you commenters, why a liberal like Althouse would question the press, you should read it too. But you won't. She is to be shunned, this apostate who strayed from the party line! SHUNNED!

I’m a liberal Democrat who didn’t realize for a long time that our mainstream media is biased. For years, I consumed news and commentary from my favorite media sites uncritically: CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times. From time to time, I watched Fox News to see what “the other side” was saying.

I lived in a kind of information bubble, but like most bubble-dwellers I didn’t know I was living in one. Ironically, the 2016 election opened my eyes to this “Truman Show”-like media universe we’ve all been inhabiting.

My awakening came accidentally when I realized in 2016 that I just couldn’t support Hillary Clinton (I ended up protest-voting for Gary Johnson). I thought Clinton was arrogant, entitled, corrupt, and dishonest. I couldn’t believe the Democratic Party would nominate someone who was the subject of an FBI investigation.

But as 2016 rolled on, I became quietly incensed. I couldn’t help noticing repeatedly that the mainstream media was shielding and enabling Clinton

Why am I "insanely obsessed" with the Clintons, as ARM puts it. Here is another article that explains it. Maybe ARM can tell me why it is not true, why it is all delusional, and I will find a good psychiatrist to put me right:

What has most greased the skids of America’s decline toward the ways of a banana republic is the emergence and acceptance of two-tiered justice and attendant cronyism and political corruption. And nowhere is this more obvious than in the pass given to the Clintons, and particularly former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

When the Clintons left the White House in 2001, taking with them over $190,000 worth of heirloom china, flatware, rugs, and furniture as they cleared out -- much of which they later had to return -- they claimed they were flat broke. Today their net worth exceeds $150 million, accumulated not by traditional means of work and investment, but rather by pay-for-play influence peddling through speeches and Clinton Foundation fundraising -- with the tacit understanding that the Clintons would be in a position to return favors to donors after Hillary won the 2016 presidential election.

It is a felony, punishable by fine and imprisonment up to 20 years, according to 18 U.S. Code 1519, to destroy, conceal, cover up or falsify any record or document whether on paper or on any digital device with the intent to impede or obstruct the investigation of any matter within the jurisdiction of any department or agency of the United States.

Even calling it a "matter" doesn't make what she did less of a felony.

Meade's post prompted me to look where Quarry Ridge was. I was sure it was related to a couple of abandoned gravel quarries south of Verona. My father help popularize scuba diving at one of the quarries in the 1970's. (not the one open to the public at Firemen's park -- but east of it across Locust Dr). Back then, I don't believe those streets were named yet. They were just access road. The unnamed quarry I recall was about 20-30 ft deep and had several submerged pieces of large machinery of the type used to dig gravel. It seemed to me like the miners struck a water vein or spring and had to abandon things in a hurry. I assume that the commercial grade gravel was glacial in origin.
