Trump has 4 tweets on Comey.

1. "Wild Bill" — is that a new nickname? I don't remember seeing that one before.

2. I see he's now spelling "slimeball" as one word. I assume he did not read my post commenting on his 2-word spelling the other day: "I'm utterly certain the correct spelling is 'slimeball,' although forevermore I will pause before writing 'slimeball' and think of Trump and feel that it would be an allusion to Trump to write 'slime ball.'"

3. "...  Comey... how come he..." How Comey. How Comey of Comey, how come he...?

4. I love the rhetorical technique — so Twitter — of inserting a second, more cynical voice in paretheses: "how come he gave up Classified Information (jail), why did he lie to Congress (jail)...." Trump keeps it simple but also trusts the reader to understand the extreme compression. We get that "(jail)" is a second, more devilish Trump, heckling. It's like he's his own Silk.

5. These tweets are well-timed to force the Sunday shows to take notice and to make it hard for them to keep up (especially since so much of the time that would have been devoted to Comey had to be reapportioned to the Syria story).

This is fucked up. It's an FDR that's needed, not some right-wing American fascist applying the same fraudulent tricks set to an American tune.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day and Squeamish occasionally gets something right. As here when he says "This is fucked up"

It really is, Squeamish. You've identified yourself as a progressive/fascist (you seem to agree they are the same thing) and yet you complain when someone brings fascism to America. I would think you would be happy.

It's a puzzler.

Not that I think that what President Trump is doing bears any relation to fascism or progressivism. Just that you seem to think so and I do not understand your lack of joy.

The Chinese, Confucian view, which more succinctly expresses the essence of conservatism, makes all virtue personal. This is correct, there is no "civic virtue" independent of personal virtue.

How is that working out in practice? Current Chinese culture is a parasitic culture, dependent on the West for their current financial position, their primary contribution having been restricted to providing massive sources of cheap labor. And this leaves aside its totalitarian nature. There is nothing admirable here, yet you imply the opposite.

As they say in the classics:
"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

But you are collapsing. It is a cultural collapse, it is accelerating, and I don't think it can be stopped. It is completely obvious, blatantly obvious. Everything is simply becoming dumber by the year.

Every parent I know says the same thing about the public education system. At some point in the future there will be a preference cascade among parents who will fight back against a mostly childless secular clergy that wants to force their will on those who procreate.

You can avoid this, as individuals, but not as a collective.

That really is what the current schism is now. The left wants to drag everyone else down into poverty with it. Some of us want to remain free.

The Chinese have had a very, very long run.

The old (historians) joke goes that India has no history, while China has too much of it.

Confucius pre-existed just about every Greek philosopher, and nearly every (speculative) author of the Old Testament - that is, he was alive, probably when the Bible had just begun to be written down. In all that time his works and schools have been perennials (other than when the Qin Emperor ordered books burned and scholars buried).

In all that time, other than, possibly, during the height of the Roman Empire (50BC-400AD) and after, maybe, 1600 or 1700 AD, China was the most advanced, civilized place on Earth, even in times of collapse, civil war and conquest. Even its troubles were titanic. The Roman Empire collapsed once; China collapsed seven or eight times, depending on how you count. When Europeans started to mess with China in the 19th century it was run by a foreign dynasty nearing its end state.

The West European explosion of 1500-20th century was unprecedented and put the "West" on top. But this is ending. The Chinese may well be back on top soon enough. I don't think it will be such a good thing, but vae victis.

Modern academic leftists would hate your comments regarding the superiority of western culture btw. They hate it and teach hate of it. Thats one reason the era of western supremacy is ending. These people teach the teachers that teach your kids, and such stuff has its effect. Year after year, they are less bold, less self confident, more diffident.

Teddy Roosevelt predated Fascism by 3-4 years so never knew about it. But how did his political philosophy differ from Mussolini's? I suspect he would have embraced it had he known.

FDR, in the 20s and 30's publicly lauded Mussolini as doing amazing things for Italy. He was also quite impressed with Herr Hitler for a while.

You care to try again?

But in the 20th century most have been Cantonese (Guangdong) as the route out of China was through Hong Kong.

Note that South China has considerable ethnic "structure" and there are many ethnic groups there that aren't obvious to an outsider, even if they fall into some general language category like Fujian or Cantonese.

Not sure I would have ever come up with "proto-fascist" on my own but, yeah, he was.

Then you answer your own question. Not sure why you keep harassing me about it. You see T.R. as a proto-fascist and I don't. A non-fascist would be satisfied to agree to disagree with someone but I guess you're just too much into badgering people about their uncontroversial lack of dislike for another Mount Rushmore commemorate (and well-rated president) to comprehend that your opinion is somehow not the only one worth considering.

Still waiting for your explanation of the differences between progressive and Fascist ideology.

Not holding my breath.

Damn. The part where you do it long enough to pass out is where things stop being so boring.

Read all you want. I don't see T.R. as someone wanting people to subsume their identity into that of a corporatist state. He busted the trusts rather than putting them to the use of the state. If you want to argue against the force of history, go harass a university professor, or a few thousand of them. Not me. You're the one with the strange minority opinion that you demand everyone agree with and account for. But sure, there's nothing fascist about a personality trait like that - I'm sure.

Here you go Michael. I didn’t say it was based solely on race, you moron.

“What Is A Cultural Collapse?

Cultural collapse is the decline, decay, or disappearance of a native population’s rituals, habits, interpersonal communication, relationships, art, and language. It coincides with a relative decline of population compared to outside groups. National identity and group identification will be lost while revisionist history will be applied to demonize or find fault with the native population. Cultural collapse is not to be confused with economic or state collapse. A nation that suffers from a cultural collapse can still be economically productive and have a working government.”

And it’s bullshit.

Mussolini was very well liked in Progressive circles in the 20s and 30s.

Pat Buchanan's book, "The Unnecessary Wars," has quite a bit about Mussolini and has some good points.

Buchanan thinks it was a serious mistake for the Brits to go after Il Duce over Abyssinia.

They had done some rather violent colonizing and The Boer War pretty much zeroed out their moral authority.

Mussolini did not like Hitler and, had he stayed at a distance, he probably would have died in bed popular with his country men.

The New Deal was pretty much Fascism with less drama.

Read "The Forgotten Man" sometime.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Yes, because non-fascists really list 6 books on a pseudonymous blog comments section demanding them as a reading assignment so that an argument that only that party to the conversation wanted to engage.

Nationalism is not exactly the same thing as fascism. If that's not a good enough explanation for you, not sure what would be. Again, try being less fascist and agree to disagree - if that's not too taxing on your supposedly non-fascist self.

I don't have to like everything about T.R. I'm sure being a strong-willed bull moose led him to a couple positions that we thankfully avoided then and are probably better off for having avoided in hindsight. Demanding that someone be either perfect or evil is a pretty ridiculous stance for anyone claiming to respect history to take, actually. It's what's called "splitting" among psychologists and is a hallmark feature of several personality disorders.

But yes on the balance I liked much of what he was about and don't think he was as analogous to Mussolini as you do. He could have been less imperialistic, but that was not as intellectually respectable or easily defended or mainstream a position to take back then. He had respect for the land he conserved and the philosophy of the natives that embraced it and proving oneself in the wild and invited Booker T Washington to the White House even if his strong opinions on empire and some "natural order" to conquest and warfare were a hell of a lot less savory to me.

So, what of it? Again, if you're into identifying historical saints vs. sinners then you have a much bigger project to prove than anything involving just T.R. alone.

Lol.

Nothing funnier than invoking Hitler-lover Pat Buchanan to ratify a progressive pedigree to Mussolini.

If you don't like FDR then the answer is to avoid economic depressions. But Republicans can't seem to do that and even just last week Michael K. was arguing with a real economist on this blog that economics was not a real field of study with any answers to offer those deciding policy.

Because you're stupid enough to confuse that euphemism (in quotation marks) with the actual slavery that it stands for in the PRC.

So admit that you're pro-slavery, then.

Even if you don't believe that the Chinese labor situation is slavery obviously it's hard for them to get as much as their labor does if they hadn't started out in such a shittily backward economic state to begin with. “Reminiscent of Fascism is the principle that the state no longer leaves the economy to its own devices … Without question, the mood accompanying this sea change resembles that of Fascism.”

Mussolini speaking of FDR 1936

“It’s the cleanest, neatest, most efficiently operating piece of social machinery I’ve ever seen. It makes me envious,” adding that, “I find Italy doing many of the things which seem to me necessary … Mussolini certainly has the same people opposed to him as FDR has.”

Rexford Tugwell, 1935 or so.

===

New York Times reporter Anne O’Hare McCormick wrote fawningly in the aftermath of Roosevelt’s inauguration that Washington, D.C., is “strangely reminiscent of Rome in the first weeks after the march of the Blackshirts, of Moscow at the beginning of the Five-Year Plan … America today literally asks for orders.” The Roosevelt administration, she added, “envisages a federation of industry, labor and government after the fashion of the corporative State as it exists in Italy.”

===

The Nazi Party newspaper, the Völkischer Beobachter, "stressed 'Roosevelt's adoption of National Socialist strains of thought in his economic and social policies,' praising the president's style of leadership as being compatible with Hitler's own dictatorial Führerprinzip" (p. 190).

===

America's ambassador to Italy, Richard Washburn Child, was so taken with the Duce that he initiated and played a major role in producing Mussolini's Autobiography, which was published in 1928 by Charles Scribner's Sons. It appeared that same year in serial form in The Saturday Evening Post.

In his foreword to the work, the envoy praised Mussolini as “both wise and humane,” as an administrator of “superstatesmanship,” and as a political leader of “permanent greatness.” In Fascist Italy, wrote Child, “unexpected joy is found in the leadership of a Mussolini … It is absurd to say that Italy groans under discipline. Italy chortles with it! It is victory!”

===

President Franklin Roosevelt expressed admiration for the Italian leader, and sent him cordial letters. In June 1933, Roosevelt praised Mussolini in a letter to an American envoy: “... I am much interested and deeply impressed by what he has accomplished and by his evidenced honest purpose of restoring Italy and seeking to prevent general European trouble.” In another letter a few weeks later, the President wrote: “I don't mind telling you in confidence that I am keeping in fairly close touch with the admirable Italian gentleman.”
