"Four Women Accuse New York’s Attorney General of Physical Abuse/ Eric Schneiderman has raised his profile as a voice against sexual misconduct."

"Now, after suing Harvey Weinstein, he faces a #MeToo reckoning of his own," write Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker.
Eric Schneiderman, New York’s attorney general, has long been a liberal Democratic champion of women’s rights... Now Schneiderman is facing a reckoning of his own. As his prominence as a voice against sexual misconduct has risen, so, too, has the distress of four women with whom he has had romantic relationships or encounters. They accuse Schneiderman of having subjected them to nonconsensual physical violence. All have been reluctant to speak out, fearing reprisal. But two of the women, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, have talked to The New Yorker on the record, because they feel that doing so could protect other women. They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Manning Barish and Selvaratnam categorize the abuse he inflicted on them as “assault.” They did not report their allegations to the police at the time, but both say that they eventually sought medical attention after having been slapped hard across the ear and face, and also choked. Selvaratnam says that Schneiderman warned her he could have her followed and her phones tapped, and both say that he threatened to kill them if they broke up with him. (Schneiderman’s spokesperson said that he “never made any of these threats.”)...

In a statement, Schneiderman said, “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”
Role-playing. Was the role-playing the part where you were the champion of women's rights?

Social liberal in the land of liberals. Still, it was consensual. It was neither involuntary nor superior exploitation. So, is this a #MeToo hunt for a warlock? Or is there more than one independent corroborating witness? Of a single event? Of multiple independent events? Is the prosecution betting on a preponderance of character witnesses?

Tanya Selvaratnam is actually somewhat sensible progressive, or one that eventually became so.

She wrote a decent enough book, "The Big Lie", about the evil brainwashing that make otherwise intelligent women ignore the biological clock, with tragic results. Worth a better hearing.

Its a rotten world these people live in.

YoungHegelian said...

Why does this surprise anyone? Isn't one of the primary reasons to become a secular liberal so that one has fewer moral constraints on one's sexuality?

I lived through the 60's. It was first all about getting rid of repression --- sexual freedom, freedom to use drugs, to live a life unburdened by the demands of bourgeois morality. Yeah, there was taking care of the poor & downtrodden somewhere there in the mix, but it was waaaaaaay below "Oh dude, just think of all the pussy!".

And, now, some fifty years later, the liberal womenfolk are discovering that guys like to play the game rougher than they do. Wow, I'm just amazed by the perspicacity of the liberal wimminz! Too bad they didn't ask their grandmas who sat in the pew with their rosary & chapel veil about how men could be sexual jerks. They could have saved everyone a lot of trouble.

Apparently the split with Schneiderman was "amicable" back in 2015.

On the whole I think Mr. Schneiderman was simply a womanizer, and the spurned women are getting their revenge. With the unpleasant bedroom habits as a handle.

One surmises that Schneiderman's sexual proclivities lean strongly toward sadomasochism, he has as much as admitted to his perverted appetites. In times past such "role-playing" was deemed symptomatic of a severely dysfunctional and even criminal personality. Schneiderman should resign immediately, and the voters of New York should blame Cuomo for exposing them to ridicule.

You may be mixing up the offices of the New York (state) Attorney General and the (federal) U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The latter office took the referral from the Special Counsel and executed the search warrant(s) for the homes and offices of Michael Cohen. As New York AG, Schneiderman is working some Trump-related investigations but he wasn’t executing the Cohen warrants.

And I expect that nothing about Schneiderman’s resignation will slow down any investigation. It may just eliminate one threat (exposing Schneiderman) that Trump might have used to defend himself against New York state charges.

buwaya said...

What Trump was saying about Schneiderman years ago may have something to do with Maurice Greenberg (AIG).
Schneiderman was the actual prosecutor in all of the cases against Greenberg back in 2005, and he kept on after him later, in the series from 2013-17. Schneiderman had a powerful enemy.

Trump and Greenberg go way back, though the relationship wasn't always pleasant.
Trump was good enough with Greenberg 20 years ago to try borrow a pile from him, but he got turned down.
Trump seems to have taken that badly, therefore slagged Greenberg in 2005 when Spitzer/Schneiderman were after him.
Interestingly Greenberg was one of the first tycoons to pay a call on Trump post-election.
One of those I wish I were a fly on the wall things. No doubt the NSA has recordings.

Since they both can't lose, why not try something old fashion like the law. Does Dr. Althouse have evidence that he did it? Is there a statute of limitations? You know...little things that one would think would matter to a law professor.

So if I have to come down on ANY side, it's legal rights, not character assassination.

I was speaking hypothetically. Ms. Althouse seems to have a very strong sense of...let's call it sexual propriety which would not be amiss in an Austen book, where the story ends at the wedding.

I recall that Joss Whedon was accused of adultery by his ex wife and the blogosphere had women screaming at him for being a fake feminist just for cheating.

One could understand that if Joss abused his authority to sleep with women ala Weinstein, but the simple act of cheating? One can't be pro abortion and cheat? One can't be for equal pay...and cheat?

But basically, if any woman anywhere has any regrets about you and brings them up, you are out of the club!

As far as THIS guy? The only people who distort facts and mislead as much as attorneys are gender studies professors. So who to believe?

Ergo, the law!

Seeing as this resignation came extremely quickly, I suspect there are more than just 4 and Schneiderman is getting out now to limit the damage and keep further revelations from hitting national news. The fact that Schneiderman and Cuomo would both have been up for reelection in just 6 months probably also has something to do with the speedy exit.

Albany is every bit as much a swamp as Washington - probably more so since Albany for all practical purpose is controlled by 5 people, the governor, the two legislative heads, the attorney general, and the comptroller. Nobody should be surprised by misdeeds by anyone in those 5 offices given the power they wield - and at least one man has gone down in flames from each office in just the last 12 years, whether for corruption or sex scandals. More than a few people both in and out of the New York Democratic Party would be perfectly happy to see Saint Andrew go down as well.

I have very mixed feelings about this whole mess. On the one side, Schneiderrman is a crap weasel, and crap weasels don’t belong in positions of authority. But there really are couples in consensual S&M relationships, and women do get seriously vindictive after a breakup. For that matter once one woman comes forward with a claim of physical abuse, there’s a powerful incentive for other vindicative women to claim physical abuse that never, in fact, actually happened. So I tend to discount assertions of long-ago misdeeds, and that goes for Cosbyas much as Schneiderman.
